GUIDer Utility Makes GUID Changes a Snap

Jared Payne's picture

Need to change the GUID of a layer but don't want to mess with the registry? The GUIDer utility might be just what what the Admin ordered. Thanks go to Jared Payne for making life a little better with this work.

Details

When you import a layer, if the GUID of the imported layer is the same as a layer that is already on the machine SVS will overwrite the old layer.

Suppose you want to push out a new layer with the updates but want the ability to reactivate the old layer if something went wrong. GUIDer will allow you take your current layer and reGUID it. If you use GUIDer, you don't have to reinstall an application every time you want to push out an update.

GUIDer changes the GUID of a virtualized application layer and its peer.

To use GUIDer, simply launch GUIDer.exe and use this syntax:

GUIDer <LayerName>

Valid GUID?

Dear Jared Payne,
How do you create a valid GUID. Is there a rule to create one or a system function to call?

Valid

GUIDgen.exe from microsoft or something like this - http://www.guidgen.com/ would generate a valid GUID.

Why GUIDer is a must

Hi, thanks this tool. When using NS, importing a layer to an existing gives an error 1060 (I suppose the prompt to overwrite) & does not import. Changing the GUID permit to import a new one without error. Just don't forgot to deactivate or delete the old one. Hope for a better way on version 7 ;-)
See this good article Updating SVS package
Just a trips, add your package version in the layer name, it will be more easy to manage... ;-)
