Internet Explorer 7 Virtualization Batch and Registry file
Using these tools you can virtualize Internet Explorer 7. Follow the steps in the readme.txt file which is also included in the zip file with the files: ie7rc1_standalone.reg and IE7 Standalone Setup.cmd.
For a full overview on using Internet Explorer 7 and SVS see my article on The Juice.
- Download the full version of Internet Explorer 7 Release Candidate 1 from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx.
- Start the SVS Admin tool, click File, and Create New Layer.
- Select the Install application Radio button and click next.
- Enter Internet Explorer 7 Standalone for the layer name and click next.
- Choose global capture and click next.
- Click Finish to begin your capture. Remember everything you do is now being captured in the layer.
- Create a folder called C:\Program Files\IE7Standalone
- Copy the Internet explorer 7 executable the folder created in step 7.
- Copy the registry file and batch/command file to the folder created step 7.
- Execute the "IE7 Standalone setup.cmd" batch file.
- Right Click on the iexplorer.exe and drag the icon to the desktop to create a shortcut. You can also create a shortcut in the all users directory if desired.
- Right Click on the SVS Capture icon on the taskbar and choose Stop Capture.
To enable the tabbed browsing (This installation should not be virtualized) :
- Activate the Internet Explorer 7 layer you created in the step above.
- Copy the C:\Program Files\Ie7StandAlone\Installation\Update folder to a network share
- Deactivate the Internet Explorer 7 layer.
- Execute the hotfix by running C:\Program Files\Ie7StandAlone\Installation\Update\xmllitesetup.exe
Note - Depending on where you downloaded your installation for the Internet Explorer 7 Release Candidate 1 from, the file name may change and you may have to change the included batch file to reflect that.

What is wrong?
I have followed the above instructions twice, and cannot get IE Standalone to work. It seems to open fine, IE6 is still there and fine, but when IE7 first goes to the settings page I get a debug error line 11... Something about not being supported?? Then, when I try and save my settings, there is ALWAYS an error.
Have I done something wrong?
Thanks,
Jacob Janzen
Final release
Will this be updated to reflect the recently released final version of IE 7 for XP SP2?
I liked the RC1 version.
Thanks
IE 7 Final
I was able to do the IE7 standalone using the final release by editing the .cmd script and replacing the name of the RC1 .exe install file with 'ie7-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe'
So far it seems to work, at least well enough for testing current in-use web apps, with one annoyance...the first launch brings up a Microsoft run-once url which gets a page load error and doesn't completely load. Probably wants to ask me if I want MSN as my homepage or something stupid like that. The failure to load completely causes it to repeat the same thing with each launch. I haven't yet figured out how to kill that off so it launches to the home page I specified.
Nice work
I'm especially impressed with the fact that this works in both RC1 and the final release of IE7. It's nice to see it packaged in a way that you can adjust it easily based on a new version, without having to recreate the whole script.
IE 7 Final
I, too, made those minor changes to the CMD and was able to get IE7 running in no time at all. Cool stuff. And I'm also having the problem with the runonce page - very annoying. But I'm also having more troubling problems. First, the Advanced tab in Tools -> Internet Options is mostly blank. There is no list of options to set. Second, the search box is dead. And third, I'm seeing generally odd behavior with the buttons and "Command Bar" items.
Anyone else seeing this?
IE7 Final
tker, would you be able to post your IE7 vsa onto the downloads page?
a
I wish...
You'll notice that the IE license agreement forbids redistribution. We considered getting permission from MS, but with so many great example apps available under more generous licenses like the GPL, MPL and BSD-style licenses (which includes the AJSL)... Well, frankly I forgot about that idea...
If we're going to jump through the hoops with MS, tho, I would prefer to post something that's a little more contained and less frequently updated.

Runonce & dead search too
I also ran the standalone on xpsp2 right after the final release and cannot get the runonce to stop running and have a dead search box.
I understand the vsa file cannot be uploaded for others to look at but I wish there was an answer for this because my coworkers would like to use it for help desk and I am unable to recommend svs right now due to the issues I'm having.
Should I have let the runonce run once before shutting off my layer capture? That's all I can think of! Thanks.
Why no tabs?
Hey Screenbert,
Just curious, why shouldn't the "tabs" be virtualized? I ran xmllitesetup.exe as an update to this layer and it appears to function, although I haven't done much more that read some news.
Is virtualizing the "tabs" still an issue with the production release of IE7?
Thanks,
Jason
