The Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP Base Layer Definition File creates a "Launch Layer" that can be used to invoke Internet Explorer 8 with the correct COM Clsids environment for Microsoft Office to view/open online attachments from a webpage opened through Virtualized Internet Explorer 8.

NOTE: This base layer must be activated before the Internet Explorer 8 layer is activated.

 Prerequisites

- Symantec Workspace Virtualization v6.1 SP1 or greater
- Symantec Workspace Virtualization Layer Definition Tool. Download.
- Internet Explorer 8 Layer Definition File. Download.

Installation

The steps for creating the Internet Explorer 8 Isolated Layer are very straight-forward.

1. Extract the download that accompanies this article to your desktop (ie8-winxp-base-1.0.47.0.zip - where -x.x.x.x is the LDF version).
2. Double-Click the .EXE (ie8-winxp-base-1.0.47.0.EXE is a self-extracting zip). This will invoke swvldf.exe (Layer Definition Tool) with the proper parameters to create the Internet Explorer 8 Isolated Layer.

NOTE: As a security precaution, right click the extracted .exe file, select properties and check the "Digital Signatures" tab and ensure that "Symantec Corporation" appears in the Signature List. If the .EXE is not digitially signed with the Symantec Certificate do not run the executable on your system.
