With this tool you can move a single layer to another location. This way if you have multiple hard drives, you can improve performance by dividing layers between hard drives.

How does this improve performance?

You seem to be implying that running lots of layers off one HD causes system performance degradation?

If this is so in your opinion, could you substantiate please?

I am wondering as in another thread (yet unanswered) I have asked if running let's say 80 layers simultaneously is practical.

Multiple Drives and Performance

In SVS 2.0, eighty layers would likely be a problem. In 2.1, it's not.

Regardless, I'm sure that CondorMan is referring to what would be true for any software -- when you have multiple drive spindles working for you at once, you get better performance. Dividing up data by layers might not have a mathematically predictable benefit like RAID striping would, but I suppose if you have a set of apps that you use all the time, dividing them across multiple drives might help (whether SVS is being used or not).

Right....more concurrent spindles, less demand on each one

Thanks for your comment Scott,

Makes sense what you say. I had asked thinking there might be something SVS specific that improved performance over multiple spindles.

Scott, I was also wondering if I could coax you into another reply to this thread here, where we exchanged questions and answers before.

Thanks much,

Peter

Getting to them...

...as I am able. Many of your questions deserve FAQ entries; they're questions I answer all the time verbally. So stand by...

It's helpful to ask one question per post, btw. As the Altiris people look through pending items, a stand-alone question will be seen as "low-hanging fruit" and probably get answered much more quickly.

Thanks for great support

Greatly appreciated, Scott, and duly noted on the practice of one fruit at a time...will stick to it.

Move Layer not working on 2.1 beta?

I'm getting an error running Move Layer, "Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135)".

This is using the 2.1 beta personal edition under a fairly standard XP install. Should Move Layer work in that situation?

A bit more investigation

A bit more investigation shows that error relates to not having .NET 1.1 installed.
