The Mozilla Firefox Browser Layer Definition File (LDF) provides a mechanism for customers of Symantec Workspace Virtualization to create the Virtual Application Layer and package without the need to capture the installation.

Prerequisites

- Symantec Workspace Virtualization v6.4 SP7 or greater
- Symantec Workspace Virtualization Layer Definition Tool. Download.

Installation

The steps for creating the Mozilla Firefox Browser Layer are very straight-forward.

1. Extract the download that accompanies this article to your desktop (Firefox<AppVersion>-x.x.x.x.zip - where<AppVersion> is the version of Mozilla Firefox and -x.x.x.x is the LDF version).
2. Double-Click the .EXE file Firefox<AppVersion>-x.x.x.x.exe). This will invoke swvldf.exe (Layer Definition Tool) with the proper parameters to create the Mozilla Firefox Browser Layer.

NOTE: As a security precaution, right click the extracted .exe file, select properties and check the "Digital Signatures" tab and ensure that "Symantec Corporation" appears in the Signature List. If the .EXE is not digitially signed with the Symantec Certificate do not run the executable on your system.

Supported OS Platforms

Mozilla Firefox Browser Virtualized has been tested and validated to work on the following OS platforms:

Windows XP SP3 X
Windows 7 32 bit X
Windows 7 64 bit X

Required Files

The LDF will download the following files:

7 Zip command line utility - this is required to expand the Mozilla Firefox Installer

Mozilla Firefox Installer

If the swvldf.exe tool is unable to download these files, click the above links and save the files to a directory named "downloads" in the same directory where the *.LDF file resides.

Notes

This LDF package is based on the "Portable Apps" version of Mozilla Firefox. The LDF package does not contain any Mozilla Firefox files, it contains a definition of all the files required to build a virtual application package. The portable structure is in no way required to virtualize this application. Use of the PortableApps files is convenient because the file download is reliable and the application structure complies with a well-known structure which facilities the creation of shortcuts using the LDF.

Change Log

Date Version Change Description
08/15/11 1.0.40.0 Updated LDF to create Mozilla Firefox version 5.0.1.

Hey guys,

Since i  was working on getting this application virtualised i thought i'd drop it on you for testing pleasure.

It seems no one is sharing any applications. Is there a place where people are posting their virtualised copies of popular apps?

I'm working on how to share LDFs for virtual application layers. We avoid hosting virtual packages as these may contain files that we don't have the rights to redistribute. LDFs contain information on how to download the required files and build the layer "on the fly" which does not violate any file copyrights, etc. An LDF can be created using from a VSA. So, if you wish to create an LDF that is something I could review and make available.
Thanks!
