SEP Content Distribution Monitor (for GUP health-checking)

UPDATED: New version now available that is compatible with SEP 12.1

After hearing customers mention they could benefit from increased visibility over the Group Update Providers that are active in their environment, as they are a critical part of their content infrastructure, the Symantec SEP product team have created a small utility to help customers address this need.

Its a v lightweight utility that must be run directly on a SEPM machine and will provide customers with a quick glance dashboard.

Warning: This is not an officially supported tool so it is use at own risk. That said, it is reading from the various data sources it accesses, not writing to them, so use of the tool is typically low risk, and customers that have used it so far have reported no negative side-effects.
Best Regards,
GrahamA.

I got the same problem with Banksy.
I'm using RU6 and SQL2000, Win2003R2

Fixed, I've changed the username from SA to sem5 in config.ini

Thx! I've added a note to the config.ini to suggest people could use sem5 as alternative user if they have issues with table names

I've seen this problem before, it occurs when the SQL database has something appended onto the start of the table names.

Well the IPS definition dates seemed to of fixed themselves!!

I have added more GUP's and have 700+
It is all working but I am getting an error saying the script is taking too long to complete.

I fixed that by doing the following

  1. Using a Registry Editor such as Regedt32.exe, open this key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Styles

Note If the Styles key is not present, create a new key that is called Styles.

  2. Create a new DWORD value called "MaxScriptStatements" under this key and set the value to the desired number of script statements. If you are unsure of what value you need to set this to, you can set it to a DWORD value of 0xFFFFFFFF to completely avoid the dialog.

I've added reg file to the monitor to people can run it to add this value, if they see the timeout error in larger environments.

Great Tool!!!
How can I know my client is connect to the correct GUP? and How can I know which client is out-of-date in this tool?

0
GrahamA's picture

a SEP client does not log which GUP it connects to, so I can't provide this info directly via this tool. That said, I do provide details of networks and groups that have out of date clients so you can take some guidance from this on if a GUP may not be working as expected.

Re getting a listing of clients, I use that data to provide the summarised statistics but I dont currently list out the clients, I will look into adding a button you can click to get a listing of the clients.

I still need to fix an issue where the "out of date clients by network" doesnt work with the embedded database. I've made some progress there, but need some more time before I can hopefully include a fix.

There have been some other requests also on this page, thx for all the feedback and suggestions. I've been offline the last few days so will start to look through this coming week

Nice work Graham!!
I have 1230 GUP's in mine at the moment and it takes a while to refresh but is still a great tool.

Reports are working now which is great. thanks for fixing that.
A report that shows out of date clients that have checked in recently would be great.
I often find I have out of date clients but there last check in time was the +/- a day or two from the def date.
They just haven't been switched on or have been rebuilt etc. and are time consuming to wade through in any report.

Online & Out of date clients, by network is much more useful if it defaults to showing the subnets as you could tell which subnet does not have a GUP enabled.

Just have a few suggestions on each component...

Latest Versions available
- Proxy support
- Direct link to sarc

AV/AS downloads today from SEPM
- Size is showing as 0 bytes for me
- delta files doesn't work and just opens Libraries
- IIS logs only opens 3 SEPM logs but I have 6 SEPM

Distribution Summary
- Would be great to have a TOTAL of all clients that have registered

Online & Out of date clients, by group
- Would be nice to be able to choose to expand this to the top 5 or even top 10

Thx Zer0!

I'm curious ,how long does it take the monitor to load when you launch it? and how many SEP clients in total do you have in your environment?

Some quick comments:

A report that shows out of date clients that have checked in recently would be great.
Whenever I say "online" such as in Dist Summary, this refers to clients that checked in recently.

Proxy support
I've tried to add this before without success, it doesnt appear to be easy, definitely high on my wishlist for what to do next!

Size is showing as 0 bytes for me
ideally, you should only have the following IIS fields selected: Date, Time, Client IP Address, URI Stem, Protocol Status, Bytes Sent

delta files doesn't work and just opens Libraries
this is dependant on your sepm_path= being set correctly. Do you have \ at the end of the path in config.ini? What do you mean by libraries? (my docs?)

IIS logs only opens 3 SEPM logs but I have 6 SEPM
interesting, I must admit i never tested on more than 3! :-) need to look into that more

Would be nice to be able to choose to expand this to the top 5 or even top 10
I can easily do this, it is just a case of getting the config right so it doesnt impact UI too much. I can potentially add config option so you can choose the amt of rows to see as one possible approach.

1239 GUP's
12000 SEP clients

2 minutes 17 seconds to refresh

I will be able to give you more feedback as the numbers grow as I am expecting 200,000-300,000 SEP clients

I have tweaked my IIS log settings sand that appears to of fixed the size reporting.
Maybe make a mention in the readme to uncheck all the defaults that IIS puts in for logging.

Libraries opens which is the root folder for documents, pictures, movies, videos
I am running it on Windows 7 desktop

All my SEPM paths are setup as mapped drives with a trailing \
The first 3 open fine but thats all.

Thanks for all your hard work and tweaking on this tool.

Cheater, you just took out the middle row of widgets.  =) still working with my guy to find a solution. I thought the out of date by client option still worked for Sybase. I thought the only widget that had problems was out of date by subnet.

But it is configurable now. In the new config.ini, you'll see some new parameters you can toggle to control whether the mid tier shows or not. And also, if its the embedded DB, that will be detected and a msg will show to say the bynetwork data can't be shown for embedded.

After upgrade to 4.1 beta, it shown "IIS log found but certain fields
are missing, see readme.txt." in AV/AS downloads today from SEPM session. I've just pasted the line of ODBC_Username, ODBC_Password, SEPM1_IISlogPath and sepm_path from 3.4 config.ini to 4.1 config.ini.

We're now using 4.0 without this problem

Since many people were missing some data such as bandwidth used since they hadnt checked certain IIS log field boxes.

The only fields you need to select are:

Date, Time, Client IP Address, URI Stem, Protocol Status and Bytes Sent

The monitor now looks in the IIS logs to verify these fields exist and that Bytes Sent directly follows Protocol Status. If it doesnt find this, it reports the warning you see.

At first, I've leave the fields by default and select the fields which SEDCM requested, I've found that the AV/AS download size is ZERO in 3.0~4.0 and can't display in 4.1.

After I remove the default fields in IIS Log, such as username and sitename, It get work now.

I think It must select the fields which SEDCM requested only, and remove all the other.

The tool does need to have the bytes field directly after the protocol status field for it to work. The other fields can be whatever you like.

The easy way to get the fields config right though, it possible, is to just select the fields that are specified in the readme that comes with the tool (have posted 4.2 with updated readme)

Looking good.for me with 1500+ GUP's and 20000+ Clients.

I am happy to see proxy support but it never prompts me for a username and password.
Just times out, displays and error message that I then have to confirm.

When you are browsing the web normally via IE, when you launch the browser, do you need to enter credentials to authenticate to the proxy?

Are the proxy IP and port configured via IE internet options > connections?

What error message do you see? (there should be an error code reported, this is useful for diagnosing the issue)

Many thx.

getting proxy support to work has been a challenge for me, it seems to be working for some now and not others. If anyone happens to have the knowledge re how to add reliable authenticated proxy support for WinHTTP via vbscript, I'm all ears :-)

Ok ok, third time lucky I hope :-) I've rewritten the proxy part of the code, and i *hope* it'll work reliably now.

It is now completely independant of the IE proxy setting. See new parameters in config.ini, inc username and password.

If it doesnt work, hover the mouse over the place where the Symc latest content normally appears to see the related HTTP and other error codes.

Let me know if it works better now! Thx for taking the time to test out the monitor and provide feedback!!

That has fixed it for me!!

Next question, if I want to change the out of date client view from group to IP/subnet what is the switch?
The config.ini file only lists the following and doesn't give away the other toggle.

# TOGGLE OUT-OF-DATE CLIENT VIEW
#
# This option can be controlled via the monitor user interface.
# Only valid if detailed data on clients running out-of-date content are visible
#

clientview_AVAS=ByNetwork_AVAS
clientview_IPS=ByGroup_IPS

Great! (re proxy)

In the top right hand corner of some widgets, there are clickable icons. For the out of date clients, by X widgets, there are icons for "switch view", "drill in for further detail" and "export to csv". Click the first icon (should look like a network), to toggle the view. Then click it again to toggle back to "by SEPM group". Let me know if it goes work.

Just thought of another useful filter as well.
It would be nice to see duplicate GUP's as I seem to get quiet a few of them and I can only see that issue getting worse in a large environment.

I'm surprised you still see duplicates. Do you see duplicates in the SEPM console also for these? or is it just the GUP monitor?

can you let me know what version of SEP it is also? 11.0.6 should be less susceptable to duplicates in general.

If there are legitimate cases of duplicates that can still occur, then I agree with you, definitely a good filter/report to add!

Version is RU6 and the Duplicates in SEPM as well.
Not a biggie but just thought I would mention it anway.

I was wondering if it was worth adding SEPM monitoring into the page as well.
You could have it list out the SEPM's current info and do the secars test URL

Things were working nicely and I have hit another error which stops the monitor showing all of my GUP's and data.
I am up to about 2000 GUP's and 160,000 clients so not sure if that is part of it.

That line appears to be FreeDisk2 = ConvertSize(cDbl(results_GUPs("FreeDisk")))

Any ideas?

Hi Zer0,

As a troubleshooting step, could you run the following sql query "diagnostics\PROVEN\GUP__OpStatus_ALL.sql" via the MS-SQL mgmt studio and verify results return as you expect. Also might be worthwhile to check the free disk space column to see if any funny results came back that could have confused the monitor's VBscript that parses the SQL query results.

Thx.

I have a two machines that show in the Monitor that are both longer GUPs and removed from the domain. Is there a way to remove from within the monitor?

open the Clients view and then search for the machines by hostname or IP, do you find them? If so, if you right click them, and check properties, do they say GUP = True or False?

The GUP monitor should be reading the data in the same way as the SEPM console, so if you see a GUP in the monitor it should also be in the SEPM console, so just wanted to check with you that they definitely aren't in the SEPM console?

If they are in the SEPM console, they will age out as part of SEPM's standard house keeping process. If they aren't in the SEPM console and are still in the Monitor, I will need to ask you to run one or two SQL queries if thats ok, so I can help pinpoint the cause.

GrahamA Product Management, Symantec Security Solutions

I do see them as True and they are still on the domain, contrary to what I thought.

One machine is going away, so I can wait til that happens and it should phase out as you mention.

The other had SEP removed but re-installed. So they show up in the GUP Monitor twice, once as offline as well as online for the other. I only see it once in SEPM though (the online one)

Just discovered this application this afternoon - so far I'm really liking this console and led to me feeling more confident about rolling out a GUP on the network.

I think it might be better to have the configuration guide in the video at the beginning so we can follow along as you go and get installed asap rather than watch you demo the features and *then* find out how to configure the ini file....

Out of interest does the software update itself or let us know when there is a new version? It looks like there has been several updates in the past and I wouldn't want my install to get out of date...

First of all - love the product.  It would be cool if there was preferences/settings that could be set for thresholds, (such as when virus definition files are out of date, etc).  Instead of it displaying red right away when it's one day out of date - preferences could be set so that it doesn't display red til like 5 days, (and perhaps it would be yellow instead, etc).

All my GUPs have the latest Symantec version, but show as out dated & red.

rev. 001 vs. rev. 002

I'm not sure where this program gets its information for "Symantec IPS versions" as my SEPM doesn't actually display this for IPS.  This tool appears to be using the 32bit IPS signatures as a reference though.  The problem is that 64bit IPS signatures are sometimes released with one revision higher than 32bit.

Current 32bit IPS defs:  2010-10-08 rev. 001

Current 64bit IPS defs:  2010-10-08 rev. 002

So the tool should probably gather version information from the available 64bit definitions.

Hi. Citlali.

How sure are you about that version differnece?

If I compare http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/securityupdates/list.jsp?fid=sep&pvid=sep11_32 and http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/securityupdates/list.jsp?fid=sep&pvid=sep11_64 both list exactly the same version.

Is Symantec trying to keep things simple? Are they hiding stuff? Are these only AV & not IPS updates?

Hi,

Just wanted to say what a great tool you have written! nice one!

And now for the boring stuff... Is there anyway to hide the 'Config' button in the main page?? We'd like to publish this via Citrix for some of our remote staff to monitor their GUP's but would like to hide the config option from them so they can't alter the config's we give them.  This is so we can publish only GUP's from their domains to them and they can't see other site's information.

Thanks again!

GrahamA,

Would it be possible to pull the Active Directory computer description associated with each GUP and display that in the table listing as a column?

Our computer names are not site relevant and I'm pretty miserable at memorizing IP VLANs across a few hundred ranges.

The description is the one thing I was able to get tagged with site specifics.

While I believe it is technically possible, I'm afraid it could add performance impact and I'm already concerned that it might be taking too long to load.

I could add it as optional (toggle on/off via config), but I likely wont be able to get to it in the short-term (have a few other things higher on the list).

All that said, if you or anyone out there is knowledgable with vbscript and can give me a sample of how to write the AD lookup and map it to my GUP SQL query, that would mean I could implement it much faster :-)

GrahamA Product Management, Symantec Security Solutions

0
DLFFB's picture

A toggle option would be great.
Speed of query never crossed my mind, I'm sure it would slow it down, especially for larger GUP users.
I only run the monitor 2-3 times a day, I don't have a need to leave it up 24/7, so speed wouldn't be an issue to me.

I found this code for the AD description
http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/ScriptCenter/en-us/c8f7e04c-7ba1-416b-9475-3ce030e7f94f

I don't claim to be a coder, so not sure how easy that is to merge.

A second option maybe?
If I manually populated a list (txt or csv) with GUP computer name and Description, could that be injected into your program output? Say, for each GUP your SQL returns, it tries to look up the cooresponding name and description in the static file. If found, place the description in a new column. If computer name not found, leave description blank?

We use single GUPs per site, not the multiple GUP. So ours is relatively static. I know that's not the case for everyone else and might not be as easy to keep a static file.

Having some trouble viewing AV/AS downloads from the SEPM. It always shows zero's across the board:

And if I click on "delta files" it opens to the user's documents folder, which of course is empty:

I'm guessing I have the logging paths set incorrectly but not sure where to go from here?

Also, I have 3 SEPMs but only setup 1 SEPM in the config file and did not configure IIS on the other 2 SEPMs for this monitor. Should I configure and include all 3 for the monitor?

Any help would be appreciated.

What I did was to edit the logging in IIS for the SEP servers and set it up so they logged to a new directory and then edited the relevant line in the config.ini file:-

SEPM1_IISlogPath=\\xxxxxxxxx\d$\xxxxxxx-Data\SEP-IIS-LOGS\W3SVC2\

Then just make sure you setup the logging events exactly as detailed in the readme file.

Oh and make sure you put the \ at the end of the directory path (as above) or it can't read the log files.

I am able to get the tool running but the data shown is not accurate. I have only shown 4 clients out of date for past 24 hours and I know I actually have hundreds. Somehow my logging is not set correctly. It appears tool is reading the first log that was created when tool was started but no new info since on clients.

Can anyone help?

Graham will you support SEP 12 with your tool or is there any chance that something similar will be included directly into "Amber"?

Hi,

I am trying to use this tool which would be very useful to our organisation. However, I am getting the below error message

"Initial SEPM database connection was successful but an unknown exception occurred

Error Code: -2147217900"

Can anyone help..? I am using SEP 11.6001 version. Let me know if you require any further details.

keyword is ABNORMAL

You can change that in the GUI by clicking on the filter icon of the Operational Status window.

Try to put "\" at the end or UNC

e.g.: SEPM1_IISlogPath=\\localhost\c$\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC2\

Hi Graham,

Do you have a version of SEP DCM that supports SEP 12.1 (beta at the moment)? Since new SEP use Apache/Tomcat, logs are in different format and current DCM doesn't work. What we need to do to be able to use it with logs from Tomcat?

Having an issue with tool - showing GUPS that are no longer used as GUPS. What/How do I
do to get these machines not to show on the GUP Monitoring tool anymore as I have started using
other machines as GUPS to replace the older ones. Within the SEPM console, the machines show
GUP: False.

Using SEP11RU6MP3
