In our company we have a lot of "Roaming users" and therefore I was looking for a solution to activate apps in SVS, based on the user that's logged in. [Totally rewritten to run as a Windows service. (Faster, with more functionality.) See the changelog for details.]

After setting the correct permissions in the registry it was possible to let users activate apps themselves, so I figured it was possible to automate this via a script. That script became a small .NET app which I wrote myself and is running on .NET Framework 2.0.

The app checks a user's group membership in the domain and activates the applications belonging to certain groups. It also creates a log file of all actions taken and can automatically import packages from a network repository (if the user is admin).

The app resides in the notification area and warns the user with a blinking icon if something went wrong.

Suggestions and recommendations are welcome.

The tool can be downloaded here:

Changelog

Version 2.1

  • Version 2.1 is completely rewritten.
  • This version runs as a Windows service and, therefore, has a lot of benefits.
  • It monitors the computer it's installed on, if any user is logging on.
  • It starts activating layers as soon as it detects a user, and not after the login script runs.
  • Activating is much quicker.
  • When a user logs off, the active layers are deactivated.
  • You don't have to tweak the registry to allow a user to activate layers. (In that case a user could activate any layer.)
  • Because it's not running under a normal user account, you can also let it import layers automatically if it's not available on the machine (without the need that a user must have admin rights).

Good add on

This is the best I've seen for companies not yet bigger then 100 users.

In one day you can set up a complete application deployment mechanism. Build your VSA, and put it in the repository on the network. Create a group and put users in it. Run the tool with a login script, and the job is done.

K00tje. Keep up the good work.

Hmm...

It's not working. I've followed all the directions and played around with the names of the .vsa. The error log only shows service started. Thoughts?

Ok, here goes...

All I'm getting is service started successfully.

Steps taken:

1) Installed .msi for version 2.1 using defaults.
2) Gave it domain\username and password credentials as requested for an account with sufficient permissions to both the UNC folder path where the .vsa files are stored and with admin permissions on the PC.
3) Configured the application to point to the shared folder and tested permissions by logging on with the credentials I put in as a service.
4) Created a security group in AD SVS_Office 2007 in hopes it would activate the Office 2007.vsa that was already imported as a layer.
5) Added a couple of test accounts to the security group, same result.
6) I just now re-installed the application, and ran through all of this again. The only thing different that I did was I deleted the existing layer. I'm no receiving an error message for the first time stating Unable to enumerate groups for user domain\username.

Thoughts?

Apology

It appears I was initially using an account with out Admin rights on the local box. My associate had changed permissions without notifying me. I apologize to the author, and the software is working great.

Thanks!
