Just downloaded a cool looking util from the Internet? Okay, agreed, you downloaded it from some trustable website, so it's not a virus. But what if it's not as useful as promoted, and throws a lot into your registry and creates some files in obscure locations? Here's a tool to use as a testbed for every odd application that you feel like running/opening. [updated to give an option to save the layer with a custom name]

Put its link in your sendto folder and use this to launch those joke exes and newly-downloaded applications. It'll capture the runtime in a temporary layer. And as soon as you exit the application, the layer is automatically deactivated and deleted. No traces are left on system.

Run it, Shut it, Forget it!

Though I've had very good results testing it with some trojans that auto-start and put files in Windows folder, I would NOT recommend that you use this for virus-testing!

Sounds like a good idea!

How does it create a temp layer? Can this be scripted to always run something in a temp layer?

My idea is this: When the user logs in, you could have this little app create a temp layer for the same program. When they log off the temp layer would be thrown out.

Let me know if that will work...

Your idea...

Its a temp layer in the sense that it get automatically deleted once the program is exited.

About your idea, yes its feasible and doable. The biggest issue however is that while the capture is active (in this case, the whole current windows session) you can't activate other layers.

Though here's an idea that just might work for you. Capture your app in a new layer and on every boot, reset its layer and activate it.

let me know how it sounds.

Your tool can produce a

Your tool can produce a temp layer where is stored all is captured during the session and after it will be deleted the layer content.

This feature can be also used for deleting temp files for Internet browsers such Firefox or Opera?

Thanks for your interesting idea.

Layer reset?

Unless I'm not able to understand something here, wouldn't a layer reset be able to do that as well?

I'm interested and would like to explore more in this. Please explain your idea.

Thanks

Option

How about an option (maybe in the TNA) to avoid deletion?

E.g. if I come to the opinion that the app is worth to keep, I would like the deletion to be skipped. Saving we an additional capturing process.

Good idea!

That'd certainly be good. What'd be the best way:

- Delete by default and if before quitting the app, person selects 'Keep this Layer' from tray menu, then keep it.

- Or after quitting the app, a msgbox displays asking for keeping/deleting?

I'd personally go for second one, which though is not completely unobtrusive, is safer.

Thanks

Thanks true,

Thanks true,
You might want to add a timer to the msgbox, e.g. 5 seconds.

Cool Tool!

Hey rajat,

Congratulations for this cool tool!

I'm usually very skeptical in using user-contributed tools. However, this one I've had to try! Very useful.

I'm looking forward for the second release with the dialog box to keep a tool one likes.

Cheers
