Updated EZ E-Mail Collection v1.1: Great Tool for Sending E-Mails Based on PC Names

May 16, 2008 01:20 PM

This is a tool that can assist in e-mailing users before deploying software to their machines or any other management task.

This tool will only work in Microsoft Exchange environments where Outlook is used and the profiles are inventoried. These get inventoried by default.

Updates for this new version have allowed for a Blind Carbon Copy (BCC) field and the allow for return characters in e-mail.

The ASDK is required to be loaded on the NS Server. It is not required on the client machines.

All unhidden collections will display when the program first loads. Depending on the speed of you NS server and the number of collections you have this could take from 10 seconds - 2 minutes.

Double Click a collection to populate the TO field. All the e-mail address are based upon the exchange profiles created on the PC and that get inventoried.

The Message Body allows for HTML code. The easiest way to get it formatted is to write the message in Outlook and click view source on the message. Then paste everything in the message body.

Basic logging for troubleshooting purposes is in the %temp%\EZEC.LOG file with timestamps.

The app.config has three settings that need to modified:

NS_Server : NSSERVER.DOMAIN.COM
SMTP Server : SMTP.DOMAIN.COM
Default_Domain : NTDOMAINNAME

For the domain you will need to enter the netbios name that shows under the domain column in Altiris reports. For instance the DNS domain name may be altiris.com, but the netbios domain name is AltirisNet.

Once my company moves to Exchange in a few months [yes I know FINALLY..... :)], I can see me putting this type of tool to good use.

AeXInv_AeX_EU_Contact_Detail is the table that is used for e-mail addresses. I'm still using the ASDK to execute the query when getting e-mail addresses.
It does properly handle more than one outlook profile on each PC.
I'm glad the tool is helpful.

Good job on this! I had a different idea for doing this, but it required SAMS, which not everyone has.
What table are you pulling the e-mail addresses from? Does it properly handle more than one Outlook profile on the PC?
