I have found the console in NS 6, 6.5, and 7 to be very confusing and unorganized. Some real thought should go into the next upgrade as to how the console should be designed. Why not have all setting, policies, or jobs for a certain module all under that particular component. If I wanted to configure something in Patch management, I could go to Patch management and configure the settings, jobs, task and/or policies right there. Now I have to go from Settings to Manage and then maybe ...

It would be nice with a function to send out urgent messege to all computers from NS or deployment. För example when you need to push out a message that say that is some sort of problem, who the users need to know about maybe logout or that the e-mail server is down.

Hi, I think it would be brilliant if we could see in 'real-time' a graphical overview of which package/site servers need replication to become up to date and in addition their organisational layout. In most cases they have block out settings applied, and it would nice to see when they start communicating again, or from a troubleshooting point of view, we could instantly see which package/site servers have lost thier sync with the NS Server. Currently this is quite a manual, long winded ...

When creating software deployment jobs within NS it would be great if there was a software prerequisite toolset of some sort. This toolset would allow you to specify OS and application requirements that must be present before software installations can continue.

I suspect I'm not alone in this...Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2/Core are definitely on our short-term radar.  What is a bit of a longer-term upgrade is NS7/CMS7/LSS/RS7.  We're going to need support for Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2 in NS6.  Hopefully the underlying OS architectures of Win7 and Server 2008R2 (GUI mode) is close enough to Vista that it would not be a monumental effort to make the NS6 Altiris Agent ...

Since the original release of Notification Server 7 (and even a little before that during the beta cycle) I download the symantec.pl.xml file daily to review if the content has changed. In fact I do not do this, I create a shell file to do it in my stead - it's so much more efficient than I could ever be ;). In all cases, after running this for a few month now I have the following data structure on my server (note that the files are named after the md5 hash value of the ...

When I decided to upgrade to NS7, I could not find a separate downloadable item on Symantec Download page for NS7.  To upgrade from HD6 to SD7, I had first to download and install NS7, then install SD solution to it. And since, there is no NS7-only download available, I had to download CMS 7, which downloads NS7, then add SD7solution to it. It would be really nice if Symantec adds NS7 as a download item to it's Download page, so that we do not get confused when we need to ...

Hi, This is a cross post, from the forum mentioned in the subject line, I did on October 21st, 2009 Hi, I have noticed that OOBM (Out of Band Management - covering vPro, ASF etc) doesn't have it's own forum. In my experience this is a forum that may well get a fairly significant amount of use! It also appears to not be recognised by Symantec as a product yet!? What do the community think? Regards, David.

In NS6 you had the ability to enter report parameters before the report executed.  In NS7 the report executes as soon as you select it, and you can't make any changes to the report parameters until it has finished running.  This can be particularly frustrating when a report takes a very long time to run.

how about adding some of the more commonly used tech terms to the forum spell check dictionary?  words like "unicast" "multicast" and product names like "altiris"  "backupexec" and things like that.

Prelude Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever... ...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, ...

Many of our users are mobile and use a VPN client to connect back to our network.  Consequently, they have 2 or more IP addresses (one for the onboard NIC/wireless NIC and another for the VPN connection).  We often would like to use "WOL" or "Immediately notify each computer of task" options in the Software Delivery Task.  However when reviewing the NS Log, we see a lot of errors from AeXNetComms.dll like this: Module: ...

NS 7 currently generates an internal schedule calendar. The calendar displays such events as block out periods, maintenance windows, and more. It would be nice to expand this calendar to display other task and jobs. Such as when agent pushes are scheduled, software delivery, or inventory jobs will run. I currently keep this in a spreadsheet. I think it would be beneficial if NS generated this report automatically.

How many of us have been beaten up by managing deployment for Adobe updates for the Acrobat family of products? What about managing the deployment of the many versions of Java?   Managing patches for any application is cumbersome at best. If this isn't on the road map, it should be.  What are your thoughts?  Any other products that should be considered for patch deployment via NS7?

When you enable and run a Managed Software Delivery policy on a PC you can double-click the policy in the Altiris Agent to see additional information, including the source location for the download and the download status.  This same information is not available when running a software install task or job.  You see that the task is "Running", but that can mean that it's downloading or actually executing, and it's not clear which unless you look at the Altiris Agent ...

I think it's important to post FAQ's and critical updates and issues to the top of forums. I really have no idea how the popular discussions gets populated, if it's just by # of clicks (it certaintly isn't by # of replies). It may cut down on the numbers of new posts, but it would help new users, and in my opinion make the forums more 'usable'.

I think it would be cool if there could be a section under forums specifically for SDK related stuff.  That would give us coders an easy place to help each other out.

In NS6 it was possible to double-click a task schedule under Task Status, select any machines that the task failed on, right-click, and choose Start Now to immediately re-run the task on those clients.  This was very convenient when you wanted to retry a task that had failed on some clients.  This option does not exist in NS7.  You can restart the entire task, with all of the devices that succeeded and failed, but to run the same task again on only failed clients you have to ...

Creating a Client Task Schedule in the NS7 console gives you a lot of scheduling possibilities that would otherwise not have access to.  Unfortunately, you can only run a single task as part of the Client Task Schedule and cannot schedule a job.  With a Client Task Schedule you can, for example, set a schedule for a date in the past so that a task runs once ASAP, or runs on System Startup.  You can't schedule jobs to run at System Startup, and setting a job to run ...

I would propose a suggestion to create an alternative managment consle than web browser based. In the futur I would like to see a  MMC snap-in management console with a more intuituve structure (like SCCM) which also have better performance than the web based on Altiris. Both SCCM and Landesk are using management console, why shouldn't Altiris do the same since this would enhance the look and feel for administrators on Altiris products. Rune
