When creating software deployment jobs within NS it would be great if there was a software prerequisite toolset of some sort. This toolset would allow you to specify OS and application requirements that must be present before software installations can continue.

Prelude Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever... ...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, ...

I can see lot of discusssions still going on over the topic "Returning an Exit Code from within Wise script". In case of Wise script wrapper installs, it is important to get an exit code from the installation so that in case of an error returned from the install. Exit Installation action exits the WiseScript .EXE with an Exit Code. An exit code should be a Non-Negetive integer value. I would like to have an enhancement in Wise Package Studio, which will ...

The big disadvantage I see is that as soon as the number of postings rolls over for more than a couple of pages, no one is going to have the time and inclination to go through several hundred postings to see if their idea is already there. Neither will browsing techies have the time to consider the merit of each one of several hundred, or maybe several thousand postings. So is someone going to provide an index of ideas? Is someone going to identify duplicate ideas and merge them ...

Now I don't know if this is  even possible, but I had an idea and I thought I would throw it out there.  I wonder if it would be possible to just convert an MSI to a VSA for use with SVS as opposed to doing a setup capture where other unwanted files and process activity may be captured during the installation.  I have done a little work on this just to see what I can come up with and I have found that it is fairly easy to extract files from the MSI programmatically ...

The most difficult issue my students have with WPS involves Custom Actions. I think it would be beneficial for Wise to include a bunch of Wizards in the product to help those new to Application Packaging add the CAs they need. PS; some dual monitor support for WPS could be really good. PPS: I think you need to upgrade WPS a bit more often.

I think that Symantec should ensure that all their applications are available in Windows Installer format and come with a guide to customising the application using Wise Packaging Studio. You could call such a program "Administrator Friendly" or something, and even extend it to include 3rd party apps (for a fee, of course!). Have some rules like: Comes as Windows Installer. Includes an Admin customisation guide. No post install setup... Disable registration... etc.

In wise 7.0 you can edit ini-files. At customer sites I sometimes get setups who edit other text-based files. For example: the services and host-file in the system32/drivers/etc. directory. At this moment Wise captures the total of the file, which you do not want. If other programs already have made changes to them, those changes would be overwritten. I now use some scripts to edit/delete/write such textfiles, but it should be pretty nice when it would be handled automatically. I would like ...

I have an enhancement request for Wise Package Studio / SVS. I want to automatically deploy software in a layer on a user's computer. Not using Altiris Deployment but by GPO in the AD. My idear: Compile an SVS package or export an layer. Wrap the package in an MSI. Make some custom actions in the MSI that uses the SVS Dll or the SVS Cli to import the SVS inside the MSI into the SVS on the computer the MSI is being installed on. Possibly first check if a layername exist already. It is similar ...
