Hello. I use the new Software Catalog (Software components), available from CMS7, with a new huge listing available from SP1 (near 80'000 software components). It is a very great value-add from Symantec, all the same we we would like also more included information regarding "dependent rules", "inventory rules", etc... Now, also SVS 2.1 is included with CMS7, so it is easy to activate the check box "run in a virtual layer" to redirect the package ...

In SWV 6.1 there is a feature called "Auto Run From Layer". It would be nice to have a similar global feature "Auto Run From Base" that defines processes that should never run from a layer or at least act as if they were started from the base. An Example: right now when a user receives a mail (using virtualized mail software) containing a url to an installer and the user clicks this link, iexplorer.exe and ultimately even the installer ...

It would be nice to see a profile management tool integrated with Symantec Workspace Streaming. If you use Symantec Workspace Streaming with virtual applications, it will store the user settings locally on the client computer in a GUID under the FSLRDR directory for files and registry settings. if these user settings would be stored on a central server, it would be possible to roam over different clients which has the users applications and settings. As an alternative it would also be ...

Hello, Except I miss something or trip/trick for this, we can not capture a new layer or update an existing, if this layer has a "high" dependency to another. eg. if you create a layer for your SQL express, and you want to create another layer for your DS installation: You need the SQL running, to install your DS. But you cannot do that because to capture a "new application", you must deactivate ALL your existing layers ! I also try to create an "empty layer", ...

Prelude Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever... ...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, ...

One feature I would love to see  in Workspace Virtualization is the possibility to define registry exclusions (similar to the extensions / directory exclusions). Best regards, John

I would like to see "feature" to move RW layer to Userprofile. That would enable use of roaming profiles with Symantec Virtual Profiles. Now rw-layer stay in computer but in VDI and Corporate Workspace (TSE) there many many benefits of using roaming profiles. In VDI enviroments you don't know what computer user will have when login. -Petri

On the old Juice site there was a wiki where customers could post what apps they have been able to virtualize. It was a great feature for me. I was able to check and see if app I was working on worked for someone else. It was probably a nightmare for the people who work at Symantec (because all of the data was unverified).  I would be nice to have an area of the web site where the Symantec-verified apps are listed. It would be nice to have a list to look at before I create a layer (or ...

I'm a Home user. I have only one PC. But I happen to use several other ('s) computer, where we may not have our favorite software. So we may be forced to download & install the tools of our need. In India still Internet is a luxury affair. Not many have access to it. Its my Dream to have apps in my USB thumb drive and carry them around. The Problem with other available Portable Apps solutions is the nativity of the Software is lost. For example the Start menus - they appear in the ...

SWV Installation Notes state that the need for using a clean OS machine during SWV or SVS install is to avoid problems that an installation’s logic could cause: in fact an installation can contain logic that checks to see if a file is already installed and in that case important files might not be included in the installation. To avoid the problem program developers could update SWV or SVS software so that they could intercept that logic at the moment of comparing file names, so that ...

I read this article from Brian Madden who is known throughout the world as an opinionated, super technical, fiercely-independent desktop virtualization expert. He's written several books and over 1,000 articles about desktop and application virtualization. His blog receives millions of visitors per year and is a leading source for conversation, debate, and discourse about the application and desktop virtualization industry. In his column, he clearly indicates how Symantec can dominate ...

Now I don't know if this is  even possible, but I had an idea and I thought I would throw it out there.  I wonder if it would be possible to just convert an MSI to a VSA for use with SVS as opposed to doing a setup capture where other unwanted files and process activity may be captured during the installation.  I have done a little work on this just to see what I can come up with and I have found that it is fairly easy to extract files from the MSI programmatically ...

I think that Symantec should ensure that all their applications are available in Windows Installer format and come with a guide to customising the application using Wise Packaging Studio. You could call such a program "Administrator Friendly" or something, and even extend it to include 3rd party apps (for a fee, of course!). Have some rules like: Comes as Windows Installer. Includes an Admin customisation guide. No post install setup... Disable registration... etc.

I wish I could create a sub-layer of an existing layer. I have Microsoft Office in an SVS layer, the problem is that I have several applications that are plug-ins for the Excel products (like Adobe Acrobat). The problem is that if I want to virtualize the plug-in, I have update the existing layer, and then the plug-in becomes a part of the Office layer. I wish I could instead have it be a layer underneath the main layer so that I could Activate Office and not have to Activate the ...

I wish there was a way to open two different layers at the same time within the SVS Admin application. There are times when I need to compare the contents of one, with the convents of the other. I realize that I could get confused which was which, but if the Edit Layer dialog displayed the name of the layer instead of "Edit Layer" this would eliminate that problem. Besides, shouldn't I already know that I am in the edit layer window? It's pretty obvious.

I'm used to using Wise, and many times when I try to add files to a layer, I end up moving the files rather then copying them whenever I drag the files into the "Edit Layer" window. As a result, if I delete the layer, I lose the source files. I wish it would either copy the files into the window or ask me if I want to copy or move the files whenever I drag them onto the folder within the "Edit Layer" window.

I wish there was a way that whenever I edited a layer, the changes only occur when the window was closed, and that I could have an option to Revert back if I want to undo any changes that I had made.

I'd request SVS users to post and share the default excludes that they configure in all or most new layers. As Scott already mentioned, Global Excludes are coming in next SVS release candidate, these'll probably be the ones that you'll configure at one place with the new SVS release.

When a user/admin wants to find out what software is installed, he usually looks at the Windows Add/Remove Software dialog. It would be great if SVS layers would be listed in that dialog, which is the idea. posted by Scott and solved by Rajat. An advancement would be if the user could control the layers from within this list. At least to reset a layer. Maybe it could be extended to some more functions, but I doubt that this would give more flexibility then using the SVS Admin console.

A customer suggested to me this week that it would be nice to have some sort of visual indication in the Windows Add/Remove Programs list that calls out when an application is in an SVS layer. A simple text label like "Altiris® Virtual Software Package™" would make it easy for desktop technicians to see what's what when troubleshooting a problem. I've added the suggestion to the bucket for a future release, but since that display is controlled by simple registry settings, I wanted to post it ...
