I suspect I'm not alone in this...Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2/Core are definitely on our short-term radar.  What is a bit of a longer-term upgrade is NS7/CMS7/LSS/RS7.  We're going to need support for Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2 in NS6.  Hopefully the underlying OS architectures of Win7 and Server 2008R2 (GUI mode) is close enough to Vista that it would not be a monumental effort to make the NS6 Altiris Agent ...

Prelude Initially, I wrote this about Backup Exec, because that's where I ran into this problem. I'm also a SAV & SEP veteran but don't recall seeing this heinous language in their KB articles. So maybe it's a Veritas thing. But, whatever... ...then it occurred to me that while BE may (or may not) be the only Symantec enterprise product to which the symptom applies, the cure is universal. Because it bridges a huge gap between the goals of Symantec Sales, Support, ...

When posting to the fora and even Symantec technical support; it would be realy useful if you could run a little report (either in SIM or Altiris itself) that was able to give an environment summary in a standard format. This would detail hardware, OS and solution information in a standard format, thereby making it easier for everybody involved to see at a glance all the basic information they would need before diving in any further. I know Enterprise Vault has a tool that can ...

The principle of RS's pointer system makes for a very useful form of deduplication. They could easily start competing with other products that offer global deduplication if they could have a single full backup, and then deltas permanently from that point on (never deleting the original snapshot). Basically, a 0 day expiration, with hopefully the ability to archive the system to tape for long retention if you wanted to delete it (i.e. a store closes and you need to maintain the data, but not ...

Better logging is needed for altiris RS errors. Take for example backups that occur in Netbackup. If they fail, they produce a code based on whatever events occured in the failure. These in turn let the system administrator know why it failed (relatively, they could pull additional logs for more detail from the client) but that they can start troubleshooting and implement a solution much faster. Half the time we don't know if the backup ever failed or succeeded without running some form of ...
