Symantec recently published an updated version of Norton Spot in Google Play (US-English only), and with it, turned the traditional Android mobile security model on its head with a new take on how we use our Mobile Insight technology.

Norton Spot is running a beta app that scans for problematic apps before you download them to your device. There are many mobile security products for Android, all of which take a similar approach when it comes to scanning apps for malware and privacy: the customer downloads and installs the app from an app store and at the point of installation, the mobile security product scans the app and notifies the user as to whether it is malicious. At one point, it seemed like we might never be able to stop counting. It was January and we had begun to collect data on breaches from the previous year. Up to that point, it had been an unexceptional year, as far as breaches go, with numbers in line with previous years. And then the reports of breaches from the end of 2013 started coming in. When we were finally able to stop counting, the results, as published today in the Internet Security Threat Report, were stunning. More than 552 million identities had been exposed. And the average number exposed in each breach was 4 times greater than in 2012. 2013 was the year of the “Mega Breach.”

I had a great time at last week’s Symantec Partner Engage event in Budapest visiting with more than 300 of our top partners from across the EMEA region.  In addition to sharing more about our company’s strategy and vision, it was also exciting to share the details around our redesigned Partner Program framework.  Built on Symantec’s Global Channel Strategy announced in November, the new Partner Program will better support the way our partners do business by fostering stronger partnerships that enable growth and delivering differentiated value to our customers. 

As we consider the breadth of our portfolio, we need partners who are focused on each type of customer across all levels of complexity.  We need partners that understand and can solve the needs of an SMB just as much as we need partners with deep relationships in the enterprise space to help with more complex solutions....

As many of you may recall, we made a significant addition to our mission last year... adding corporate responsibility leadership to our overall goals because it's an integral part of our overall business success... it's about "doing well and doing good."

This week, we're making Symantec history by sending off the first employee team as part of our Symantec Service Corps.

The Corporate Responsibility team offered all employees the opportunity to apply to join the Service Corps in their inaugural mission to Arequipa, Peru. The team received an amazing 205 applications and from those, 10 employees were chosen to spend a month working with a non-profit organization or academic institution. Team members were chosen based on their applications, manager and HR business partner consultations, and alignment with non-profit needs.

In my predictions for 2014, I renamed the Internet of Things as the “Internet of Vulnerabilities.” It’s not my intention to demonize the Internet of Things. We are going to see some amazing technology and real-world solutions brought forth by having so many devices attached to the Internet and it's exciting. But like many new technology trends before it, the implementation of the Internet of Things is rushing forward much faster than security issues are being thought through and addressed.

This is the nature of new trends - security is usually an afterthought. Companies are pushing forward quickly, trying to establish a market. They are thinking of how to meet customer needs, not their security. And no consumer buys into these new ideas because they are secure. They buy into them because they are new ideas.  

So, in a well-known pattern, hardware and software will flood the market with no thought to security. It will take a major security incident involving...

Pretty soon, the information above is going to be floating around the Internet. By that, I mean your information. Your pulse rate, your weight, etc. As the Internet of Things combines with the tremendous advances in hardware to allow us to gather and track information about ourselves, this data will get out there. We’ll gladly buy devices that track this information; some of us already have. People want to improve their lives by having this data collected and analyzed. And in order to facilitate that collection, to make it easy to gather and display, we’ll be entrusting that data to software applications, device manufacturers and the Internet.
