The holidays are about giving - not just to our families, but to others less fortunate than us. In the spirit of the holidays, this month we will feature a three-part series (see part 1 here, and part 3 here) highlighting just some of the wonderful philanthropic initiatives spearheaded by local Symantec offices. Thank you to everyone across the Symantec global community that is volunteering, donating and contributing this holiday season…and everyday! Today with hear from Analaura Capetillo, Executive Assistant and volunteer leader of Dallas’ community outreach initiatives.
Each year as a company, the Dallas office chooses a holiday giving project with the goal of helping someone’s life be a little bit better. Last year, we held a very successful canned food drive. This year we are excited to announce our partnership with The Stewpot, a Dallas non-profit who offers a safe haven for homeless and at-risk individuals, providing resources for basic survival needs as well as opportunities to start a new life. In addition to its core services and programs, The Stewpot has also helped to start new organizations to meet additional community needs, including Austin Street Center, Genesis Women's Shelter, Interfaith Housing and The Bridge.
Our giving program – called Adopt a Tote – was created by our team in Dallas as a fun, engaging way to support The Stewpot over the holidays. Through Adopt a Tote, each employee has the opportunity to fill tote bags to be delivered to the homeless via The Stewpot. We were overjoyed to fill 60 tote bags! The totes were filled with essential items, including:
Each bag contained:
5-6 pairs of tube socks
Note cards & 20 stamps
Fast food gift card
Travel size Kleenex
Wrist band with message of hope
Book with message of hope
Some bags also contained
Tube of toothpaste
On Monday, December 3rd we held a pizza party in the afternoon where we filled the tote bags, wrapped them and put them in boxes to be delivered to The Stewpot. We were overwhelmed by the support and had a great time preparing the bags. On December 10th some colleagues and I joined The Stewpot team to distribute these bags to the homeless population throughout Dallas.
I'd like to send a special thanks to Carrie Simon who has been so helpful in extending our reach to the spouses and families of our employees, and to all the “office elves” who helped pack the totes. Thank you!
Supporting our local communities is a core value of Symantec and our Dallas office. In Dallas, we try to provide at least two opportunities per year for our employees to give back. For example, in addition to Adopt A Tote, our Dallas office works with The Stewpot to donate unused toiletries from business trips. Toiletries are often wasted, and this provides an easy opportunity for our employees to minimize the impact of business travel and give back. This has been a great success and we appreciate all who have donated toiletries so far! This year we also supported a local middle school – Ed Walker Middle School – through our fall school supplies drive.
Do you have ideas for local Dallas causes or non-profits we could support? Please let us know, we are always looking for ideas!
