Dear all,

I have kept Content Revisons as 10 i.e. it will store 3 days Revisions.

For Example If I have Revisions Stored for the date 17,18,19 on SEPM server.

If my Clients Goes offline on 12th and come online on 18th.

Will my Client get Increamental update or full Update from SEPM.

as it doesn't have 13,14,15,16 revisions.

Kindly Revert.

Thanks

Anil

Hi Mirza,

SEP will update it's definitions with delta updates.

As per given scenario SEPM is keeping 42 revisions.(Around past 15 days definitions because Symantec releases 3 definitions per day on weekdays )

Even though client is offline for Seven days & on next day when client requests an update it will be delta update only.

Thanks In Advance

It will get full updates.

in a day there will be 3 releases.

First one will be full update and the remaining 2 willl be delta updates.

Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) creates delta update packages by comparing a starting version and destination version of two full update packages. The SEPM provides delta packages for any content that meets the following criteria:

  • The SEPM must have a copy of the starting version of the content
  • The SEPM must have a copy of the destination version of the content

Perhaps this article will help?  It explains when a client will receive the full defs:

Better explained Here

For example, if a client checks in after two days with the SEPM configured to maintain only three revisions, then the client's definition set will be older than any revision stored in the SEPM. Therefore, a delta content package cannot be built, and the full definitions package (full.zip) will be sent to the client instead.

With default LiveUpdate content revision settings configured within the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager, clients are downloading full definition updates instead of delta updates

- it will get a full package because the SEPM server does not have the same revision as the latest client revision (for the 12th) and cannot create then a delta package to this.

There is a simple rule to that - if the client definition revision is no longe available on SEPM - this client will always get the full package.

In general, I recommend keeping 30 to 50 content revisions on a SEPM, if it has the hard drive space for it.  That will save a lot of network bandwidth / prevent a lot of full packages being sent across the network.

With thanks and best regards,

Mick

"Thumbs up" for the above comment - when setting up the amount of definitions kept on the server you need to consider

a) drive space limitations on the server that can be used for updates

b) available bandwith for LU client-server communication

In case you have plenty of a) you can easily limit b) needed for this communication. But if a) is a problem you need to take into consideration the b) will be affected by it as well and in the end can cause problems when to many clients request full packages in the same timeframe.
