SMG Initial Setup: IPs for both interfaces?

Created: 04 Oct 2012 | 5 comments

I am setting up a SMG appliance in the near future and am a bit confused on how best to configure the appliance.  I am going to define the appliance as a combined Control Center and Scanner and the Scanner will do both inbound and outbound scanning.

I will use both of the ethernet interfaces, giving them example IP addresses of and  According to the documentation, these are both defined at time of initial appliance setup.

When I create the Scanner, the documentation indicates that I will be prompted to Create Virtual IP Address.  I can select the ethernet interface, but then I should type the IP address for the virtual server.  This is where I get a bit confused.  It seems that I need to type another IP for an interface that has an IP already defined in initial setup?

Any help and guidance would be very much appreciated.

thanks in advance!

Virtual interface just means it will listen on one interface for multiple IPs, thus having one network cable connected and being able to access both and You can of course still use one IP per interface with no problem. I hope this helps clear up any confusion.

Thank you for the reply!

I am going to use and cable both ethernet ports.  Given that, do I skip the virtual address setup?

I think the portion that is tripping me up is the lack of information in the install guide.  The guide does not mention selecting the physical interface and moving on; instead, it discusses selecting an interface and then defining an address.  But the address would have already been defined....

During the initial setup on the console of the Messaging Gateway you will be asked for the basic data such as a new password for the admin account, hostname for the appliance, IP addresses for each of the physical interfaces, default gateway and DNS info.

Once you supply all of this information it will restart the appliance and you can then access the control center's web interface to continue to the rest of the setup. During that time you will be asked if you want to add a virtual IP to one of the interfaces. If you do not want to do that, simply skip that step.

When I skip that step, I can then identify which Interface should handle inbound scanning and which interface should handle outbound scanning?

Hello Bill,

Yes,sure. In the next steps you may identify which interface for inbound and which one for outbound scanning and also you need to specify your domain names and internal mail servers also.

And also you can change all of these informations later wizard and anytime you want.
