Preview of features?

Andy,
Is there any way to get a short preview list of features that are being addressed in CMS 7.1? Also, how soon after CMS 7.1 will AMS 7.1 be previewed?

Support for 64-Bit OS
Improved Hierarchy Support for the Solutions
Improved Usability Support for Solutions
Support for Win7 and Server 2008 for all of the Solutions

Again, not an exhaustive list but these are the main areas for improvement.

Windows 7

Going out on a limb and sounding dumb, but I was under the impression that CMS 7.0 SP2 already had support for all solutions for Win7 at least that is what I take away from the CMS 7 SP Platform Support Matrix (KB46349: https://kb.altiris.com/display/1n/articleDirect/index.asp?aid=46349&r=0.9763605)

here the good link...

https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=46349&p=1

You are right: Most our problem client support x64 are resolved with SP2 CMS7.0.
CMS 7.1 Will be more important for:
- Install Altiris on a server x64 support: eg. To be able to host CMS7+SD7 on the same server (But, that is not a good idea I think)

  • Support Install Altiris on a R2 2008 Windows server, is also a must for a lot of customers.

- SQL 2008 support
- Better performance ??? I hope so !

SMP Support

Yes,  you are correct, that doc points out the support for the Symantec Management Platform, which is the NS.  I am referring to the rest of the Solutions having full support for the items above.  Does that make sense?

Core & Solutions

Yes it makes sense. I think some some of the differentiators that needs to be made clear is that this is for the solutions NOT the core.

Both CMS, AMS etc. follow their own update schedules.
The core platform follows it own update schedule.

Each can have support for Win 7 independently of the other but the core must support the platform first before the solution can. That has always been my understanding.

Andy, there was an earlier usability survey which asked what we thought of 7.1 only being available for Windows Server 2008 R2.  Is this a planned direction for this release?

MSFT and Windows Server 2003

Yes, that is the direction for the ITMS Suite of products.  MSFT is walking away from Server 2003 support, so we will follow that same direction. Good Question.

I'm very interested in the a bit more details about this statement "Improved Hierarchy Support for the Solutions"? Any focus on improved performance and or better real-time up and down replication? any additional details would also be a big plus.

Migration Tools?

At Manage Fusion 2009 the talk about version 7 and the transition time seemed appealing to start using 7 instead of 6.x. While I am glad about the upcoming release, it has been a painful year using a mix of NS7 and DS6.9.

I am ecstatic about the Win2k8/64 bit support on the NS, but I would like to see the same effort on the client portion with clear reporting on which plugins are 32bit and which are 64.

Finally, does anyone have a flowchart of the migration process for the NS? Going from 32 bit Win2k3 to 64 bit Win2k8 on the NS already does not seem to bode well with respect to workflow. To keep operations up, I suspect a second box would be running side-by-side? Are there any draft documents that can be customer reviewed that describes the process?

It's done in the management platform but testing to certify the initially targeted products (Inventory, Software Management, and Patch) will extend beyond the release. Plan is to finish testing these three products in Internet facing configurations for several weeks post release and, if results are good, issue a support statement at that time.

Migration/Upgrade Path from 7.0?

Bryan,
Has there been any further progress on what the migration path & upgrade process will look like for an already existing 7.0 platform? In speaking with Alex Ferguson, there still was no clear plan in place. I am told that there are some DB schema changes but to what extent is still unknown.

For anyone currently in a project to upgrade to 7.0, not knowing this could drastically affect project timelines or completely halt projects until such time as 7.1 is fully released.

I believe the major concern is the single OS support for W2K8 64bit only. And since the current platform either 6.x or 7 does not support that platform what will be the recommended actions to move to 7.1?

I see swing servers neededing to be in place as the only option i norder to rebuild the OS. Any other thoughts?

The migration/upgrade path from 7.0 - 7.1 does require a new Notification Server installation as a result of moving to 64bit. That also means that the 2008 R2 server must be installed on the Notification Server. However, the 7.0 database does not need to be 'migrated'. Once the new 64bit OS is installed, the NS 7.1 installation gives the option of selecting a database. Here you reconnect to the 7.0 database and any table updates are performed by the installation. That is a basic summary of the migration. I'm working directly with QA and the Doc team to validate all the details and document them to provide best practices. We expect to have a draft in October. In the meantime, I hope the high level description of the migration is helpful.

Still true on Oct 13th ?

Hi Sean, is your 7/27 post still accurate ?

With 7.1 pushing to later next year, I think people who have been waiting to migrate may just go ahead and jump to 7.0.

So, if they do I just want to be sure of the path to 7.1 for later on.

Thank you.

Upgrade = Server Rebuild

The only upgrade path from 7.0 to 7.1 will need to be a full server rebuild from your current OS platform to Windows Server 2008 R2 since that is the only supported platform for ITMS 7.1

Hopefully your SQL & databases are off-box as to not further complicate the rebuild.

I have downloaded the Deployment Solution 7.1 and never find the win32 Deployment Console.

This win32 Deployment Console is our firt tool in our organisation.

Direction moving forward...

Just to add some more information to this response...

In Deployment Solution the "console" as stated is based within the full Symantec Mangement Platform framework and it built on a Silverlight interface. It is as responsive as the Win32 console was and provides the same features but within a browser session now.

In fact all "consoles" such as Patch & SW Management will have similar console structures for future releases. This was kind of hinted to at Manage Fusion.

It is a very nice direction and hopefully the other product teams such as DLP & SEP will inegrate at some point using this same coding instead of just the connector solutions.

Yes, I confirm a Nice Direction

Hi, I confirm a nice direction. Just hope we can get a goal also, not only a direction...

It is very nice, but for those who try to make the DS 7.1 working, in automation for PXE... I just wonder what it would be, if it was a "beta" version.

I was testing a CMS 7.0 beta version in a real better "state". I suppose a lot of pressure to release the PXE feature, can explain Symantec release a "bad" Beta as a final product for this DS 7.1.

Hope Q&A department will make some strongest reviews, before next final launch CMS 7.1

But YES, it is a true real nice direction.  The DS 7.1 can really benefits of the CMDB, all the Software/Package/Programs components already in the Notification server, reuse all NS7 (SMP7) defined Computers Groups (and hope filters also, I should verify this!)

I just wonder if we must wait the 7.3 to get enough Quality/Reliability/Performance/Ergonomy ? But we can allways do better, and in a 1st step, just take care to make better the competitors. (or less worst :)

Keep on the run, and my best Whishes ;-)

Salut Hubert

I suggest you keep DS 6.9 for the moment, a SP5 will come soon. See my post above.

And be sure this DS 6.9 solution will still available on 2011, also in 2012 as I said: Too much OEM interest.

But I am also pretty sure as soon as the 7.x version get enough mature, we will all quickly switch the 7th version. Just to avoid the double job creation works on NS(SMP) + DS6.9.

Full any hardware OSD from a single image, will begin a quick & simple task in the near future (and now in fact), not any more the "heavy part".

The "heavy part" we try to reduce now, that is the "packaging", and we research & work in all directions:

  • Package Factoring or Package Sharing
  • MSI/MST/MSP
  • SVS/SWV
  • Streaming
  • Citrix/Terminal Services
  • XenApp/ThinApp
  • Virtual Desktop / VDI
  • Portable Applications
  • Cloud applications
  • Simple Integrated Scripting/Command line sequences
  • Interactive normal user prompted installation (a local system admin service account run the setup)
  • ...

Any direction or Ideas to reduce the time/cost & the risk associated software deploy & life cycle. And software management + ITIL/Service Desk + Workflow are good tools for. As soon as they will be mature enough for being use in small/medium size companies (50 to 5000 terminals). We are not so far this.

Server specs...

Recommended server specs for supporting my environment are...

OS: Windows Server 2008 R2

CPU: 4 Cores (2 CPU/2 Cores)

RAM: 16GB

SQL: Off-box, dedicated MS SQL CLuster

This is a single client facing NS supporting 10K nodes with capacity & scalability for addtional/future nodes. Specific memory requirements are determined by how many clients you will be supproting to its tough to provide exact numbers. I believe the minimum would be 4GB.

If you will be using a central mgmt or reporting server then your memory requirements will need to also scale as necessary.

SSL is broken on some things

SSL is broken on some things with version 7. For instance, clients that boot to WinPE will not authenticated to DS7 if SSL is required for all sites in IIS. Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Management Soltion constantly trys to send things over none secured channels causing popups with that warning.

No upgrade from BETA to RTM

From my understandings there isn't an upgrade path from BETA code to RTM release. The reason is because code fixes etc are implemented in various builds of the beta code with each release. In previous beta's each release required a fresh install of the products, you couldn't just update from beta1 to beta2 for example.

There is at some point in the code release structure that Symantec's code will be supported by engineering. I believe this is at the Release Candidate (RC) stage. At this point there is code lock down unless a widescale flaw/bug is found. If nothing is found this same code goes to RTM and then becomes GA within 7 to 10 days.

Please confirm CMS or ITMS?

I initially understood this to be a CMS 7.1 beta release, but i see it refers to ITMS 7.1.....does this mean it will include the Service Desk 7.1 beta as well at Asset Management?

If it 'does', then i'm getting drunk on excitement! :-p

Haha, lots of people speculating and saying "I think" instead of reading the top of the page. It's due 0700 L.A time, 15 mins ago. Personally I was fully expecting another few months delay so I'lll hang tight! ;)

Hi Everyone,I've read some

Hi Everyone,

I've read some post where users were talked about an issue during the installation with the Install Readness Check that didn't allow to begin the installation.

Without disable the check for SIM prerequisites, this can be due to the fact that your server cannot connect to external network, just try to verify that server can connect outside and in case sets your proxy into the control panel> internet options>Connections>Lan settings,
you will see the installation pass the SIM checks like a charm.

I hope this can help someone out there.

Thanks.

Adding a site server

Has anyone experienced this issue?  While trying to add a site server, the picker page pops up but just sits there?
