0xe00084af failure on a local backup of server.
I am getting the dreaded 0xe00084af - the directory or file was not found, or could not be accessed. Final error category: Job Errors. For additional information refer to link V-79-57344-33967
This link doesn't help as I am not running a remote x64 Sav10 (it is local and not x64), I am not running Continuous protection, I don't use DFS, It's a local server not Linux and Advanced file option turned off also provides the same error.
The server backs up to lto tape (which was recently replaced at the time the error started to occur in case this is relevant - replaced as the tape snapped in the drive).
A backup of remote servers to the same hardware in a different job works fine.
I tried creating a new job to backup (any) one file on the local C (only one drive) , that i know is not in use and get the same message. Turning on or off the Advanced File Open option doesn't solve the problem either.
Running 10.0 service pack5 (it was running without service pack and I upgraded to 5 to see if that would help - it didn't).
Server also has exchange agent which works too (from another server)
Server has been rebooted and problem still occurs.
vss list writers does not show any problems - all of them come up as stable no errors - details below in case this helps.

Seeing as though this server holds all the users shares and company data, it is critical that this server gets backed up.
Not sure what other information I can provide - let me know!

Managed to fix this after some tip offs in the forums and some trial and error. I installed wsus3 on the server around the same time the tape drive was replaced. This installation installed the "SQL Server VSS Writer" service which is described as "Provides the interface to backup/restore Windows Internal Database through the Windows VSS infrastructure. The WIndows Internal Database is the WSUS 3 database that gets installed.
By stopping just the SQL Server VSS Writer service, the backup of files worked - starting the service meant backups failed.
So - now need to find out if there is a work around this (apart from stopping the service, running the backup and starting it again).
Is the upgrade to 10d free (I ran the checks before upgrade and it said I would need to obtain a new licence for the exchange addon which I don't want to purchase if the system is currently working already for exchange and I have no guarantee at the moment that 10d would fix the problem?
If this response answers your concern, please mark it as a "solution"
Sales couldn't help - I had to talk to support - 80 minutes later I actually got to speak to a support person who confirmed it is a free upgrade after looking at my screen. After upgrading you do need to reboot, install service pack 3 , reboot, deploy remote agents, reboot *those* servers and install tape drivers (last bit optional)
On a side note for anyone at Symantec who might read this - I don't see the point in spending 3 minutes extolling the virtue of directassist whilst on hold when this product has been killed off and new cases can't be created with this tool anymore (which is a shame if it does what the musiconhold commercial says it does) and if you are changing the direct assist, please change the awful chinese style music - it is painful to listen to for 80 minutes.
I'm getting the same error since updating to WSUS 3.0, we're running Backup Exec 10 and my paper licence says that support ran out in August 2006, does that mean we can't get the free update to 10d?
If so how? I've tried going to file connect, but no serial number I have worked to get into the download site.
You can still update to 10d. The files in FileConnect are for 11d onwards (I think).

Although I can't be 100% certain, you should be ok to do an inplace upgrade but I guess it depends on what version you are running to start with. Depending on the complexity of your backup infrastructure, I would make a note of the configuration before you start though.
Don't forget to do the check for updates once you have upgraded to the latest version but be warned if you install from cd it will take a long time to download all the updates for 11d - It took about 45 minutes to upgrade a server I installed from the media over the weekend. There were about 4 or 5 patches to install I think. You can download them seperately beforehand, but I found it easier to just run the automatic update procedure instead.
it would be the installation of 11d not 10d. 10d needs the service stopped. I've not upgraded my broken installation to 11d as a) there is no guarantee it will fix it and b) I don't have a support contract for that particular company.
However, I do have an 11d working fine with wsus3 on another server with no problems.
oops - this happened again.
Funny that i had this problem again this morning at a client that just allowed me to put wsus on their box. Couldn't work out why it wasn't working, googled and up popped my own KB article on google that pointed here ;-)
2 years later - no wonder I couldn't remember what I did to fix it.
3 years later - still good
Thanks for you Blog. This worked after none of the symantec fixed would.
onlything is the net stop /start is for the host machine and I need to stop the VSS on a remote machine that is failing to backup witht this service running?
Lol - glad it helped. you'd
Lol - glad it helped. you'd probably have to run the command on the remote server too. you could trigger this from your host machine by using the sc command instead of net stop.
Use
sc \\remoteserver stop sqlwriter
