You would first need to register the serial number {"M" followed by 10 numbers} that was printed on the PDF certificate you received or on the piece of paper in the box to generate the license key file the progra is asking for.

Here are instructions on how to do that:

    <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

The next step is to take your Serial Number to our Licensing Portal [https://licensing.symantec.com/], create an account if you don't already have one, and then Register it to generate your license file [*.SLF].

Below is an outline of that process:

    A) CREATE ACCOUNT

    1. Navigate to the following URL: https://licensing.symantec.com

    2. Click "Create Account"

    3. Enter the required details

    4. Click "Submit"

    5. Click "I Accept" to the Symantec User Agreement

    6. Click "Licensing Portal Home Page"

    B) REGISTER SERIAL NUMBER

    1. Click "New Purchase"

    2. Enter the product serial number:

    3. Click "Submit"

    4. Enter additional serial numbers (only if needed), and click "Add"

    5. Click "Next"

    6. If needed, you can add additional email addresses for the license file to be emailed to

    7. You can also Edit the technical contact or add an additional technical contact if you want/need to

    8. Click "Complete Registration"

    9. Click on the Text link "Download License Key File : (xxxxxxx.slf)"

    10. Save the license key file to a location on your local computer.
    11. You can click on the link for "Get Software" to download the latest build of the software.

When the registration is completed you will receive your license file via e-mail as a *.ZIP file attached to an email.

Note: You do not want to open this SLF file in a text editor as you run the possibility of corrupting it.

To view The FAQ and how-to guides for the license portal, please navigate to the following URL:

    https://licensing.symantec.com/acctmgmt/home/Jump.jsp

    <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Once you have complete that, then go to the link that Paul posted above for instructions on how to install the license key file.

The key will be determining if you have a "managed" or "unmanaged" environment.

A fast way to tell if you are running a managed environment is in the main window interface for Symantec AntiVirus, where it says the last virus definition download in the lower right-hand side, there is an area for "Server", is there anything listed to the right?

If there is, then you are running a managed environment. If not, then you are running an unmanaged environment.
