11d sbs backup error(s) where none were before

Windows server 2003 for small business server sp1
installed 11d over a 10.5 demo vesion. Demo version ran fine.
Can't get a backup now, latest error is as follows:
Job ended: Thursday, December 21, 2006 at 4:56:47 AM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000846b - The resource could not be backed up because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent.
Make sure that the correct version of the Remote Agent is installed and running on the target computer.
Final error category: Resource Errors
Looking up the Symantec technet article states to allow the agent as an exception in the windows firewall settings.
Trouble is, the windows firewall isn't turned on.
What other options are there?
