This issue has been solved. See solution.

We have:

1 Vcenter host running 5 VM servers
1 VM Free host running 2 VM Servers

The instructions from Symantec is:
Install VMWARE consolidated backup framework on the media server and on the proxy server
--what framework?  Is this the agent installer?
--What proxy server?  The VCenter server?

Install the backup exec remote agent for windows systems as needed on any virtual machine that run windows to perform a granular restore.
--Again, VM?  Or VCenter server?

To recover a virtual machine, install the VMWare Converter on the temporary staging server.  The Converter is not required for use with GRT.
--WHAT?  What staging server?  What converter?  First it's required, then it's not!

Can someone please help me understand this?

Thanks.

Thanks for the help, guys! ;)

Called and got some literature, sure hated to use tech support for something I should have been able to discuss here!

The most useful link here was one posted within the past couple of weeks.

http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/enterprise/other_resources/b-backupexec_12.5_faq_10-2008_69739.en-us.pdf

It is just an overview of the agent for 12.5.

follow-up

I actually alread had that document and while it is informative, it really does not go into the items I need assistance with.

Currently, we have no protection, except for a file backup, for any virtual server.  All attempts at using the VCB, or any other vmware snap-in has failed and keeps generating the same error I see reported on this site several times.  Though I see other reports, there are no resolutions posted under those error posts.

So, can someone please assist me in getting my servers protected and get the resolution posted for others that are in the same boat?

Thanks.

Hello macinslaw - Have you

Hello macinslaw -

Have you read the white paper on our Agent for VMWare Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI), which described setup and configuration for backups with Backup Exec, ESX Server, and VCB proxies?

https://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=68153

I see the FAQ has been posted, but this white paper might be more helpful than that document if you are having issues with configuration and setup for VMWare backups with Backup Exec.

I'll check the rest of the forum and see if I can find the errors you refer to...

Hope this helps in the meantime.

Thanks,

Aiden, Thanks for the link.

Aiden,

Thanks for the link.  No I hadn't seent hat one.  I will pour over it.  I just received a document from VMWare that has my head spinning and has me a little angry to be honest.  I am seeing that their instructions are telling me to do everything from removing all the drives in my D2D SAN and re-configuring the drives and partitions, to setting up another VM server some where for the backup to be performed.  You know this should be a whole lot easier.

I should be able to just choose the server and what and have it done, just like I do currently with everything else, though I am starting to have difficulty with my normal backups since the upgrade to 12.5.

Thanks again, I will continue my search, but do believe the info you sent is valuable.

Hey, Albert, I really

Hey, Albert, I really couldn't tell you.  I'm having trouble understanding this procedure myself.  As there hasn't been much activity here for a while, I would start a new thread on your issue.

Thanks for the reply, none of

Thanks for the reply, none of these really seems to be working for me.  I have followed all the suggestions and documents offered to me, and while I believe they will resolve most issues here, they are not a fix for me.

Thanks all for your input and assistance.

Whoa! Wait a second, please come back all!

Here's the funky issue....I have a backup job running on the VMWare servers.  The only ones that are not showing up now in the errors section of the job log as being unable to connect to them are the 2 servers in my cluster!  How is this possible?  Can someone shed a little light?
