This issue has been solved. See solution.

ON windows client,when we receive the Error 156,we first check vssadmin list writers state.we make sure its stable.

  1. If it is stable,then how to proceed next?What are the steps?
  2. How to troubleshoot in case of unix?

Check the bpfis log on the backup host.

/usr/openv/netbackup/logs/bpfis/ on unix

c:\program files\veritas\netbackup\logs\bpfis\

If it doesn't exist, create the directory and reproduce the problem, then check the log file

Have you tried to click on Troubleshooter button in Activity Monitor?

Or NBU Status Codes Reference Guide   ?

Or other status 156 threads in this forum?

Or Google? Search for Status 156 as well as error message seen in Job Details.

Or Symantec Support Site?

Please start a different discussion IF and WHEN you see status 156 on Unix/Linux client.

bpbkar and bpfis logs are needed for troubleshooting (as per Status Code Reference Guide....)

Yes.

156 = snapshot error encountered

bpfis is responsible for requesting the client snapshot to be done.

Note: NETBACKUP DOES NOT DO THE SNAPSHOT, IT REQUESTS A SNAPSHOT TO BE DONE ON THE CLIENT.
