This issue has been solved. See solution.

Greetings to All,

Could you please tell me whether a virtual layer of a 16 bit application would work in windows 7 64 bit machine.

I created a virtual layer of a 16 bit application which worked well in windows 7 32-bit machine.

When I tried to activate the layer in windows 7 64 bit machine, I receive compatibility error.

I have attached a screenshot of the error for your reference.

If a 16 bit application can be incorporated into a layer, could you please provide me the steps to make the virtual layer work in windows 7 64 bit machine.

regards,

rajan

That error message comes from the OS, not from your virtualization solution.

16 bit applications are not supported by the OS on x64 architectures.  See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896458.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes that error message is from the OS.

Is there any solution to make the layer work in 64 bit machine?

regards,

rajan

@ Switact, Downloading XP-mode might be a solution, because it works. But it is a hog of a solution.

@rajansk, can you send me the layer you created? I will then look at it and see if i can make it to run as we did that before.

@rajanskr

I downloaded the xpf and imported it on a 64 bit system and analised the behaviour.

It looks like a program that uses the drivers to connect to a serial bus. This is not allowed in windows 64bit.

What i tested is to run it in wow64. wow64 does the translation, but it does not allow you to do direct calls to the hardware. So in this case the solution is NO, you can not run this package on a 64bit system without using the hog solution that Switact mentioned.

The correct solution for this specific software package should go to Switact.
