  • 1.  2 Locations where there are Definitions (The same definitions)

    Posted May 12, 2014 08:25 AM

Hello, and happy Monday to all.

On a few of my servers, I see two locations where the definitions are located. This is causing disk space issues.

Is there a way without reinstallation of SEP to correct this issue on ONLY have ONE locations?

Here are the two locations. I tried to delete from the first location, but the servers would not allow it since the "file was in use"

    Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\CurrentVersion\Data

    Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\SEP VERSION#\Data\Definitions

This is causing disk space issues, Def files = 800+MB. so two of them are approximately 1.4GB.

    Thank you in advance.

I believe they are just a mirror (shortcut) of one another so it shouldn't be taking up double the space.

    Go thru this link:

I think it's the same as what you're seeing. SMLatCST gives the answer/explanation.

I would like to join in on this discussion.  I am currently looking at one of my machines.  I have the same files in 2 different locations.

    C:\Users\All Users\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\12.1.3001.165.105 - 2.2GB

    and

    C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\12.1.3001.165.105 - 2.2GB

I haven't been able to figure out why the same data is in both locations.  I have tried uninstall SEP, deleting and left over folders and reinstalling and it didn't change.

Any help wold be greatly appreciated.

SEP 12.1 RU5 is due for release and you may see significant disk space improvement. Stay tune.

He's asking why he has the same data in two different locations, not about disk space improvements in RU5.

    Thoughts?

If you follow my instructions in the link provided by Brian, you'd already have the answer.  Case in point:

    C:\>junction.exe -s C:\Users

Junction v1.06 - Windows junction creator and reparse point viewer
    Copyright (C) 2000-2010 Mark Russinovich
    Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com

    \\?\C:\Users\All Users: SYMBOLIC LINK
       Print Name     : C:\ProgramData
       Substitute Name: \??\C:\ProgramData

That's what comes out of the command prompt if you use the Junction tool I talk about.  Proof that we're talking about yet another Jucntion.  In this case it's likely to provide backward compatibitilty to programs written for Win 5.x that used the "All Users" directory.
