3com PXE Bootstrap

So far GSS 2.5 is working out great. What I'd like to accomplish is the ability to PXE boot my PCs w/ the option of DOS, WinPE, & Linux from a menu on the client. .....just like the Altiris PXE server :)

W/ the 3com server it seems like the .pxe bootstrap (or the menu) isn't capable of booting anything besides a regular floppy and the 3com images. Is there anyway around this? I'm not sure how the Altiris guys are making it work unless their setup updates the bootptab on-the-fly, and then the client recieves the appropiate bootstrap. Anyway, it's a real drag to have to constantly select a different bootstrap in the bootptab editor.

Does anyone have a fix for me?

Hi,

GBW creates WinPE boot packages that work with 3Com PXE. You can do it by selecting "TCPIP network boot image".

It asks for the TFTPROOT directory and copy the files to a folder named 'boot' under TFTPROOT. In boottab if you select \tftproot\boot\pxeboot.n12 for a machine, it will boot using the PXE image.

GBW can add multiple images to this too. If you run it again and create another image, you will have a selection when the client boots up.

If you do not have direct connectivity to the PXE server, just provide any folder name and copy the contents of the boot folder to the PXE server's trftroot folder.

That is a nice feature that you can have multiple WinPE images to select from, but you're still stuck w/ choosing either WinPE, Dos, or Linux (either per client or for everyone). I know w/ Altiris when you PXE boot a PC you can "choose your weapon" form the client w/ out visiting the server. It would be really nice if there was a way to do this w/ GSS. Since Altiris added the Ghost engine to their product, I don't see why we can't add their PXE implementation to ghost (you guys own them!!!!!). It's time to kick this 20 year-old 3com server to the curb.

Yes, that is a nice feature. Ghost and Altiris are in the same product group now (Endpoint management). However, Altiris PXE server is still tightly controlled by DS server.

Hi,

Ghost and DS support different needs and different market segments, and continue to do so. However, they will leverage each other whenever possible.

Have a look at this post too.

Hope this answers your question :-)
