IM trying to catalog an older tape but i keep getting the below error.

452 - When accessing a new tape of a multivolume partition, the current block size is incorrect.

I looked at below post but i can't perform these steps as it will destroy the data i have on the tape im trying to catalog.

Do you know how to go about cataloging these tapes. With your instructions i was able to catalog other tapes but just not these one's.

Here is what i did.

Yealry Tape 1 was inventoried> Cataloged and restored, worked like a charm.

Yearly Tape 2 was inventoried> but cant catalog it. It give me above error.

Thanks,

...do you know what the block size was when writing to that tape? If not, you may have to play around with different settings on the hardware, otherwise your data is unrestorable.

Thanks!

Thanks Craig!

Sorry i dont know the block size that was used at the time of the backup. We stopped using BE 9.1 back in 2009 and i think we used the Default block size. I even tried playing around with different block size settings but no luck. IM able to restore the first tape of the same year so why not the second tape? Im sure the block size would be the same for both tape. Previous Domain Admin wouldnt have changed the block size to backup to second tape. Again this is just my assumptions as i was not here back then.

I've tried setting the "Use storage media-based catalog" enabled but no luck.

Should i try renaming the catalog folder?

I think i have to stop all BE services, rename the catalog folder to .old and start the BE services back and try catalog the tape?

Yes...that is the process to follow. If it doesnt work, just revet...

Thanks!

just revet? Im not sure if im following.

Im little nervous renaming the Catalogs folder, i've backed it up just in case. Can renaming Catalogs folder cause issues?

I wouldn't recommend renaming the Catalogs folder if you are currently using BE 2012 and above.

Adverse issues can arise if you are using a CASO-MMS setup centralized catalogs or if an incr/diff backup is going to be run now, else not.

...typo: rename.

Thanks VJware. We are not using BE 12. BE 9.1 was the last version we've used of BcackUP Exec software and we have been using Microsoft System Center Data Protection.

Is there a way to read the data from the tapes using Built in NT tools in Windows Server 2003 x32?

VJware's picture

Possibly yes as they both used .mtf format to write to tape. Definitely worth a try to restore from NTbackup.

thanks! In NT utility, i can see the LTO Ultrium drive but i cant select anything to restore the tape, it's grayed out. Do you know a way to get passed that? Could this be due to LTO drivers?

Maybe stoping BE services might enable the NT Backup utility to see the tape?

CraigV's picture

BE maintains a lock on the tape drive. So stop the services and restart the NTbackup service.

Thanks!

I've stopped all BE services and launched the NTBackup Utility and it is still grayed out. AM i missing something obvious here?

Do i need to Inventory the tape with NTBackup Utility? If so, how would i do this as i dont see any option to inventory the tape...

Do ensure the Removable Storage service is up and running.

Harshad's picture

I've confirmed Removable Storage service is up and running. I do see Unrecognized tab below the LTO Ultirum and i see 2 entries for the tape but again they are grayed out.
