500MB of RAM to start with!

So 11 was supposed to reduce the foot print and yet we find on the central server it using 500MB of RAM just to start out with and that's with NO clients deployed.  Symantec has forgotten how to write reasonably sized software.  First Mail Security goes from running great on a 500Mhz Celeron with 512MB of RAM to requriing a 2.4Ghz CPU with 2GB of RAM just to function now SAV CE is renamed to EndPoint Protection and goes from <100MB of RAM managing 20 clients to 500MB of RAM managing none!  Come on Symantec, do you own stock in RAM makers?  It's gotten out of hand.  For us, we're back to 10.1.7.

I agree. We're testing this on a Windows 2000 server with 1 GB of RAM.  If I have the console open, the amount of RAM used on my server is over 1 GB.  Come on Symantec!

I absolutely agree they need to make the footprint on the memory and processor less.  Heck, I'm in the belief that you should be able to run it as a Virtual Server like I could before with SSC.  The interface is far too Vista in appearance.. The dependency on java runtime is also a concern in regards to performance.

Performance is of no concern to Symantec.  I had a rep tell me to buy dedicated hardware to run 11.  Java as a platform is a joke.  Sun has pulled the wool over everyone's eyes who thinks it's the way to go.  I have NEVER seen a Java app perform as well as a preceeding version that didn't rely on Java.  Symantec must be developing on dual quad-core CPUs with x64 boxes and 16GB RAM with stacks of RAID-0 disks for performance.  Too bad the rest of the world cannot afford to do this.  We've advised our customers to stay with 10.1.7 and skip 11 all together.  Either by 12 they'll fix it or our customers will look to McAfee or Trend or another vendor, but for 11, the sun has set.

It is truly becoming ridiculous.  After 10 we began to look for a replacement but have been holding out until 11.  Now it looks like 11 will be the last for us.  We have been tinkering with something called nod32 and have been impressed so far.
