The 64 bit War...
So, my monthly post time has come.
Any status on End Point Protection for 64 Bit Windows yet? Specifically for Network Threat, Tamper Protection and Device/Application control?
I know, I was told there simply isn't enough demand for it. With applications taking more and more ressources and memory to run clean. I think it's more of a question of there simply isn't enough people complaining about it. Something along the lines of "build it and they will come"...
And soon, will be time for renewal. If I have to pay a small fortune to get 64 bit Device Control from another provider, than the only thing SEP becomes good for is AV and at that, why pay for a bunch of features that we don't need/use. Change AV providers? Not to sound like an ass, but that's in a nutshell coming from the people that sign my paycheck...
Any status, anything at all... It's the 4,941 st point on our list, at least I know it's on a list.

Patchguard is broken and still MS prevails :(

Whilst it would be nice to have NTP and AppDevice control I am most interested in AV and AS more than any other feature.
Would be nice to hear if Symantec had made any progess with the API MS released though...

These work fine with 64 bit, Its the PTP that doesnt.
S1l3n3 pl3as3,
You have gotten the Device Control and application control to work on your 64 bit Windows to function?
So it is actaully blocking for you USB flash drives and USB external hard drives?
Yes but Application and Device Control relies on PTP to function, therefore it does not work on a 64-bit machine.
Jason: When you renew your contract you are paying for well, a contract renewal. The software is complimentary and comes with that contract renewal free of charge.
As of this date, there is no ETA on when A&D Control will function on a 64-bit platform, but I know they are working on it.
Also, please keep in mind the following:
PLEASE NOTE: this is a peer-to-peer discussion forum and not technical support. Usually customers come to the rescue. Other times, when they are available, a Symantec employee will volunteer his/her time to find and help solve issues just like any other member of the community.
Bumping your messages will not incite a reply from us.
I know this and appreciate the time from all the community and assistance. I am not looking for technical support. I have called and spoken to many and always get the same response. All I am looking for is someone, who knows something to indicate something with regards to the topic at hand.
Thank you for your personal time Ted.
So heres whats happening.
Device control for 64 bit is written, we have to find the right time to put it in, most likely towards the end of the year
Network Threat Protection and IPS already works on 64bit.
Certain components of TruScan work on 64bit already, the rest will be fixed later this year.
Tamper Protection again, towards the end of this year.
Application control is not yet written and is far more complicated, no ETA as yet, but likely next year now

Ted- that was about the worst post on here ever! Paying for a contract renewal and the software is 'complimentary'?!?!?!? There's a slew of sarcasm that wants to come out, but in effort to remain polite I'll simply suggest that you should really reconsider your opinions about what your customers are paying for.
Hi Paul,
Thanks for news, at least we will have something for 64bit clients in future. On the contrary ETAs are not good since more and more customers are going to 64bit (specially vista) and by the time of release of Windows 7 (Sep 2009) you'll see it increase significantly. If Symantec do not have something to offer at that time, it will lose the market. So you need to run.......:smileyhappy:
I just find out that GFI already has device control for 64bit OSes...
Thanks Paul for the insight as usual, always well the benefit.
End of the year, are we talking slated for release 4th quarter? That's still a long ways off.
I am pretty sure, I have already registered for Beta testing, but if in the case, I didn't, would like to volunteer as soon as you have a release that needs testing.
Currently preparing to roll out a large quantity of machines in 64 bit, slated most likely around 2nd quarter or towards the end of the Spring...
With the obligation of keeping the machines in the "refrigerator" for heat purposes, we will be running extenders (ethernet to USB) for Keyboard/mouse/etc.
@Reza
Although GFI as well as a few other companies offer 64 bit protection for device control, and I have tested a few of these solutions, the price tag becomes ridiculous quickly. For those we have evaluated somewhere between 40$ and 65$ per node.
@Amos
Also definitely agree that Ted's response was less than satisfactory and was not taken well, it is, however what it is.

As stated in other posts as well as in the stickies (rules) above, this is not a technical support forum, but rather a community help forum. I'll reserve myself in telling you how 'politically incorrect' and 'non-customer service oriented' that post was.
