6.5.X VCB Incremental Failures

I'm having problems getting a VCB proxy server working correctly. I have created a policy using the flashbackup, etc, etc.

The real meat of the problems is that my Full backup when I run this policy works just fine. But when I try to run an incremental I always get a failure of status 42.

1/13/2009 16:11:25 PM - Error bptm(pid=25416) system call failed - Connection reset by peer (at child.c.1296)
1/13/2009 16:11:25 PM - Error bptm(pid=25416) unable to perform read from client socket, connection may have been broken
1/13/2009 16:11:25 PM - Error bpbrm(pid=25400) from client myclient.domain.com: ERR - i < ImgMapEntry.bitmapsize: assertion failed

I'm not sure if this is a problem with my setup, my client, or what. I've tried this on both 6.5.2A and just upgraded to 6.5.3 this morning with the same results.

What should I be looking for/at to try and resolve this? Am I just doing it wrong? Again, Full backups work fine, just not incrementals. Thanks!

I am having this exact same issue- error code 130, running VCB Proxy with flashbackup-windows backing up a windows 2003 R2 vmware instance. I have run some logs but do not see why the incremental is causing this error. It definitely states the same issues as below:

1/13/2009 16:11:25 PM - Error bpbrm(pid=25400) from client myclient.domain.com: ERR - i < ImgMapEntry.bitmapsize: assertion failed

but does not include the connection reset or cannot read statement. Simlpy the above and then unable to send server message.

Does anyone know what could resolve this? Seems silly that we cannot do incremental backups.

Is there a Windows or UNIX/LINUX client?

Has some restrictions on using flashbackup for both client types, look:

■ FlashBackup policies do not support file systems that HSM manages.

■ FlashBackup does not support VxFS storage checkpoints that the

VxFS_Checkpoint snapshot method uses.

■ FlashBackup supports the following I/O system components: ufs, VxFS, and

Windows NTFS file systems, VxVM volumes and LVM volumes, and raw

disks. Other components (such as non-Veritas storage replicators or other

non-Veritas volume managers) are not supported.

■ FlashBackup on Linux supports only the VxFS file system on VxVM

volumes. For Linux clients, no other file system is supported, and VxFS file

systems are not supported without VxVM volumes.

■ FlashBackup on AIX supports only the VxFS file system, with VxVM or LVM

volumes. For AIX clients, no other file system is supported, and the data

must be over a VxVM or LVM volume.

■ Note these restrictions for Windows clients:

■ FlashBackup-Windows policies do not support the backup of Windows

system-protected files (the System State, such as the Registry and

Active Directory).

■ FlashBackup-Windows policies do not support the backup of Windows

OS partitions that contain the Windows system files (usually C:).

■ FlashBackup-Windows policies do not support the backup of Windows

System database files (such as RSM Database and Terminal Services

Database).

■ FlashBackup-Windows policies do not support “include” lists

(exceptions to client “exclude” lists).

■ FlashBackup is not supported for the disks that are shared among

nodes in a Microsoft Cluster environment.

This is a little bit different from the normal snapshot client -since traffic is through the VCB proxy it first performs a snapshot of the VMware client. This VMWare client is then mounted to do a flashbackup from inside the filesystem. This is a completely inactive filesystem so all data is backed up without an issue and is available for instant recovery of a VM, unlike other snapshot clients directly.

So, this should still be very plausible to do an incremental from - unless you have specific documentation that these rules apply to VMware clients via VCB Proxy itself - as this is significantly different than the client setup.

Look at your bpfis log, that is the log that is associated with the snapshot client.  Also take a look at c:\windows\temp --- That is where vcb writes its logs to.

I had a problem with incrementals failing on all guests and used the following vmware kb to correct the problem.  I am not sure if this applies to you or not.

The issue was resolved once i set the value to 3 for the snapshot type. 3 is not an option in the java gui, and you cannot scroll up to its value, you have to manually insert it. However, this allows for file level incermental and running the fullvm mapped for the full backup. You'd think they'd fix that- or at least mention that in its gui settings and not just deep in a document somewhere.

Exclude List Error with VCB

I'm having problems getting snapshot (bpfis) to work correctly again. Since the VCB PROXY SERVER is a NBU media server and has no exclude list by default I tried to inlude it by myself with the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\NetBackup\CurrentVersion\Config\Exclude
[exclude list
....
....
]

After the registry  change snapshot backups started very slow, after that the key was removed and all services restarted but the rror message below still appear on the console. Restarted the server and the message below come again.

Any ideas?

Thanks

6.5.4 EEB available for these spurious errors

I too has these bpbrm errors appear intermittently. You can remove them....

NBU 6.5.4 BUG REPORT: A VCB (VMware Consolidated Backup) job may display spurious "Unable to add to excluded file list error" entries in the Job Details.
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/329064.htm

An Binary fix available to remove these error messages from Symantec support.

Tip: Get overview/document your NBU environment. Run 'nbsu' and review the output.
