I was hoping that this version of Deployment solution would give users the option to enter a hostname and select the OU to place that machine in when running intial deployment menu. Seems to make total sense to me and a lot quicker than predefining a computer.  Can anyone give a good reason why this feature isn't a good one / why it would not be implemented. ? - please dont say it will be out in the next version :-)

I have System Config tasks that are applied that put computers in right OU based on the imaging job selected.. maybe if you have a ton of OUs that would be too complicated, but it works great for us.

For hostname we use serial number so our techs aren't trying to create a name in AD that already exists, so can't help you there.

I was thinking I could do an conditional job and appply system configuration based on machine type and Site server. Would be long and messy but might work. The probelm is the hostname. If we did serial number then that would be fine, unfortunately our naming convention doesn't let us do that.

How many OUs do you have? dozens, hundreds?  If the conditional job was too complicated you could just have multiple image jobs - Image X computer for X ou, Image X computer for Y ou, etc.

Hardware independent imaging makes it simpler if you can do that, though setting up each job is a little annoying (shame cloning doesn't work better for jobs).

This could be accomplished with scripting in winpe.

I would have way too many options in the Initial deployment menu. I'll stick with the tech renaming PC and moving to correct OU. Simple and effective and manual :-)

I'm not a scripter so have no idea how to do it. Unlike SCCM, theres not much about in terms of available scripts. I've posted a couple of times and had various responses about it but nothing that works that good. It just seems an obvious task that should be a function of deployment solution. I'll not bang on about it cause i've talked about it to death. I'll chalk it up to another fail on the part of Symantec and get on with my life :-)
