80.000.000 small files: How to backup?
Updated: 23 May 2010 | 6 comments
Hi,
We have a SAN attached server which has a LUN with well over 80.000.000 very small files.
I'm wondering how to backup this one, and would like your input on this.
The SAN is a Dell/EMC Clariion CX380 (4Gbps) and the LUN is on a Windows 20003 server (2TB in size).
The SAN has Snapshot & mirroring licenses installed (Although I have no room for a full mirror ;) )
Out of this size approx. 1TB is in use right now for the 80.000.000 files.
We are using Netbackup 6 MP4 on a Windows 2003 server on a Sun/StorageTek SL8500 with T10000 drives.
My questions:
1) Should I make it a SAN Media server, with local staging?
2) I understand there is an 'Advanced Client' available. Could I use this client in this case and how does it work?

Raw eh?
\\.\drive:
Unfortunately it is a database that keep hacking on the volume all night :(
Don't RAWs fail if the volume is busy as well?
Also, how can I restore from RAWs?
Yes, ideally you would do a cold backup. You would restore the entire raw device.
Consider flash backup. I think it is part of the Advanced Client option
