8.0.2 CPU usage
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 9 comments
Not a question, just an observation that 8.0.2 seems to have significantly higher CPU usage than previous builds. Haven't had the update installed long enough for real benchmarking, but seems at least 25% higher so far, enough that I had to add a second vCPU to our VM. Not a big deal, just wasn't expecting that. Considering the official recommendation has always been for at least 2 vCPU in prod, no complaints, just FYI for anyone else planning for the update.

Hey Doni,
Thanks for the posted information. I haven't personally seen many benchmarks in production, however, I do know that we do much better under load with 8.0 as compared to previous versions. So hopefully this shouldn't cause much hardship for anybody. If any. I will keep an eye out for any potential complaints.
Thanks!
Tom
I've heard it does use more
I've heard it does use more CPU, and yes dual CPU's were always recommended... But I also think it can now process more messages per hour than before through a more efficient engine...
There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) http://mysupport.symantec.com "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."
Console Performance
I have upgraded my VM Appliance to 8.0.2 and since then, accessing the console is painfully slow. If I check CPU and memory in Virtual Center, I don't notice anything especially alarming. This was immediately noticable after the upgrade. I do have only 1 cpu and a maximum of 1024mb allocated. Do I need to expand this even though it doesn't appear to be taking all that is allocated?
Hey Jim,
The concern I guess would be whether you come under some sort of spam attack or something along those lines. Of course we have settings to help with those, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared. The nice thing though is with the virtual appliance you can always have a backup if things go wrong, but of course it's never fun.
I would say try to just make sure you have room to breath. It's better to set it up now and not have to go into disaster recovery later if you end up having an issue.

Fixed it
II took the shotgun approach: I added a second CPU and doubled the memory limit to 2048. The console is now responding as expected.
Thanks
Hmmm
Hi,
I'll see if I can find out what the deal is here.

Minimum requirements
Hi,
minimum requirements as per installation guide says 2 vCPUs & 2Gb RAM. I've seen cases where CPU usage goes very high when using only 1vCPU that is solved as soon as you add a 2nd to the VM.
Federico
biggger problem.
I have same problem just my vmware host server use 70-80% CPU on the services running SGB after I updated to 8.0.2. this is before I open for incoming mail.
so I loaded my Backup, to get back to normal around 15%
When I look closer, I can see inside my SBG guest the CPU usages look normal. it is my Host server there for some reason uses a lot of extra CPU cycles after I updated.
setup:
2 vCPU
4GB RAM
vmware server 2
Linux host
mail is coming through but 400% increase in CPU can´t be right.
anyone got an idea for something to try?
Case?
Hey Alkae,
I just wondered if you'd actually opened a support case for this issue?
A 400% increase does seem a little steep to me so perhaps that should be your next port of call.
