GUP is a distribution point which can help to reduce the bandwidth utilization while forwarding the defintion to Remote site.

Port 2967 is required to open for the GUP.

GUP is a group update provider, its same like all other clients, except it will get a sharedfolder where it can store updates and clients can get updates from this GUP. this will help to reduce your bandwith so that all the clients need not have to come for SEPM for updates.

2967 should be open to get updates however this is configurable from SEPM

What is Gup and configuring a new Gup?

    Group Update Provider Overview
The Group Update Provider was a feature request to support designating a particular client to serve as a computer that will get content updates and publish them. This is designed to provide functionality vaguely similar to configuring a legacy Symantec AntiVirus client as a secondary server.
The computer that is downloading and publishing the content is referred to as the “Group Update Provider.” The computers in the client group will use the designated “Group Update Provider” as a local proxy for content updates.

    Hello,

    Group Update Provider

    Use the Group Update Provider

Specifies one or more computers to act as a LiveUpdate server for the group. For example, you might want to create a Group Update Provider to conserve bandwidth to clients in a remote location over a slow link. In this scenario, the Group Update Provider downloads the latest updates from the server. The Group Update Provider then updates the clients in the group. If the Group Update Provider is offline, the clients contact the server for the updates.

The Group Update Provider can reside in any group.

Note:  The Group Update Provider is available only for Windows clients.

The Group Update Provider (GUP) proxy functionality of SEP client listens on the TCP Port 2967.

Please go through the Knowledgebase Articles & Training Program on GUP provided which would explain you GUP Architecture.

    Hi,

The GUP role can be assigned to any SEP client. When assigned the GUP role, a SEP client will act as a caching HTTP proxy - storing both delta and full revisions of SEP content. Other SEP clients can be configured to utilize the GUP for definition and content updates via LiveUpdate policy from the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM).

There are several considerations that need to be made before utilizing GUPs are part of the overall content updating scheme in an environment:

    1. SEPM/SEP version considerations
    2. Network considerations
    3. The total number of clients
    4. The total physical hard disk space available on the GUP
    5. Other hardware limitations of the GUP
    6. Determining Worst Case Scenarios for bandwidth and storage usage
