    Posted Mar 24, 2011 12:00 PM
When the microsoft outlook is opened as of yesterday on my PC, each message clicked pops up the following:

"The Add-in "Symantec Antivirus Outlook Protection" (c:\program files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\vpmsece.dll) cannot be loaded and has been disabled by Outlook.  Please contact the add-in manufacter for an update.  if no update is available, please uninstall the add-in"

The solution posted for this problem DOES NOT WORK:
    1. close outlook
    2. browse to Documents and Settings\<local user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
    3. delete extend.dat

I've tried deleting that file and rebooting, etc.  It never fixes the issue.  Any other solutions?

MS Outlook 2007.  MS Windows Xp Pro SP3

    Thanks.

    This may help you.

    Solution

At least two potential solutions for this problem exist.

    (1) Delete the file C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\extend.dat and allow the file to be re-created when Outlook is started.

    (2) Disable the Symantec AntiVirus Outlook Protection component from within Outlook:

    1. In Outlook click Tools > Trust Center...
    2. Click Add-ins
    3. Choose Exchange Client Extensions from the Manage: drop down menu and click Go...
    4. Uncheck Symantec AntiVirus Outlook Protection
    5. Click OK.

Your 2nd solution stops the pop-up from appearing, but does that mean the emails no longer are scanned for threats now?

      Thanks.

Here are two newer KB's that should help you repair the issue.

Symantec AntiVirus: Microsoft Outlook error "The add-in 'C:\Program Files\Symantec_Client_Security\Symantec AntiVirus\vpmsece.dll' could not be installed ..."

"The Add-In "C:\Program Files\Symantec Client Security\Symantec Antivirus\..." could not be installed or loaded. This problem may be resolved by using Detect and Repair on the Help Menu."

      Hello,

Microsoft Outlook Auto-Protect scans Microsoft Outlook email attachments, if the feature is not installed, it would surely not scan the emails.

What version of SEP has been Installed?

Outlook Auto-Protect is a type of ongoing or background scan. This scan gives Outlook and Outlook Express users additional protection from threats sent by email. If you use Outlook or Outlook Express, it is recommended to have this enabled.

Incase, if you are carrying a older version of SEP.

You can probably you can resolve your issue by Installaing the Latest version of Symantec Endpoint Protection and get the Outlook Protection Feature installed.
