Adding Fields to an exisitng Resource Type

I am am absolute beginner with Altiris and am struggling to get the inventory solution to track fields that we want to track.

In the built in "Computer" resource type, it tracks a lot of useful information about a machine. What it does not track would be school and room number information. I have tried everything I can think of to add these fields to the computer resource type, but nothing works.

I see the section where I can add data classes, but adding something to this field does nothing to the tracked data in the "list resources" tab. What is this good for if it doesn't change what information is tracked?

I even tried to create a new resource type, but all I get is generic fields of "Resource type" "Name" "created by". How do you control what these fields are?

Adding something to the

Adding something to the "list resources" will not show because you are in the MAIN configuration tab.
You would want to be in the resources MAIN tab then drill down to Resources\configuration items\Asset Types\IT
Note: you need to modify the report to include the data classes you created so it will show in the view.

There are two ways to accomplish what you are doing.

1. Set up your organizational structure. Cost centers = schools, locations = rooms.

2. Create a new set of data classes, add to classes to the resource type computer.

Still missing the key button

I don't know why I never considered "Cost Center" to be an option for building, but that is a great suggestion. However it still doesn't solve the problem of the "comptuer" resource type not having an spot to put our asset tag numbers or a comments field.

So trying your other suggestion....using the web console for our NS.

If I view the resource in the Resources tab, "Resource management->resources->configuration items->Asset Types->IT" There are options to create a new entry (record) for that type of resource. (refresh, create new, edit, table view, copy, find, find again, access grid options, pick reports).

I need to edit the data class, not just add new entries to it. My data class called "IPSD computers" exists and has generic table columns as follows "Resource type, name, createdby, createddate, modifiedby, modifieddate". I believe these fields were added by default when I created the new resource.

How can I change those columns to be what I want them to be? I don't want a report, I want to edit the actual resource so it tracks different data.

In order to change the

In order to change the displayed columns listed in

Resource management->resources->configuration items->Asset Types->IT

you need to modify the All Computers" report that is selected in the "pick reports" to include your asset tag.

You can edit data classes from Configuration>Resource Settings>Data Classes

To assign data classes
onfiguration>Resource Settings>Resource Types>Asset Types>IT>Computer
