I've been playing today with scripting the install of Windows 7 and Windows XP with ITSM 7.1

After a few hours, I'm still on "Import OS Files". In each case I've had to import each OS source twice before they appeared in the interface. This is a very slow process, and doing even just once is fairly frustrating.

Here's what I did. First was to get to the file import screen...

Next I clicked "Add Files" and then selected my source. Unlike DS 6.9 where it asks to locate a specifc file (WINNT.EXE for the case of XP) in the source so that you get the correct level, here there is no indication of what level you should import as your source. I selected what seemed sensible from experience and clicked OK.

The screen then appeared to freeze for a while, with no indication that anything was happening. I decided not to rush it and took a break.

When I got back I then found a box waiting for me to click OK again. I could see that the source files were there now in the package, so I assume the first OK was just to index the files, rather than copy them. I clicked OK again and was greeted soon by the discrete Java copying icon and then waited... and waited....

Eventually the window retreated and I was back OS files window with nothing there. I clicked 'refresh' and still nothing. So I repeated the procedure. This time it worked.

I went through exactly the same process for Windows XP and Windows 7 source files. Is anyone else finding issues on this front? The error logs don't show any new errors for the duration of this process.

    Kind Regards,
    Ian./

For SOI in DS 7.1, you should select

i386 folder for Windows xp and windows 2003

sources folder for Windows 2008, 7 and vista.

this process take time, about 20 to 25 mins.

    Hi arjain,

Thanks for replying. Getting in the folders isn't a problem -on that score I'm simply reflecting that,

    1. The interface doesn't help them locate the correct source level for scripted installs
    2. The interface has lots of dead-time which is not terribly good design
    3. You have to click OK twice in effect to import your source which is confusing

And of course, in my case I had to import the sources *twice* before they appeared as imported in the interface.

The 'OS Files' window has a couple of niggles too.

    1. The field extender bar extends only for a split second, and then snaps back. I've seen this in other parts of the interface too.

    2. The window appears to have no end. Tonnes of whitespace extending below the entries. And odd design as it appears that there is a scroll-bar on the OS Files entries.

    Re:

    1) have you tried using "Compatiblity view" in IE and then resizing? Found that this fixed similar issue for me.

    2) There's a lot of aesthetics in 7.1 I've got issues with like:

    - The inability to resize the SMA agent window

    - The inability to have red/green status dashboards showing large numbers of individual nodes thanks to the "web part" based design

    - The inability to simply resize the web parts!

    - Mulitple scroll bars where one would do (thanks again to our web part friends)

but don't get me started :)

    Hi Richard,

Well done mate -turning on compatability view has fixed the snap-back niggle. One down....
