Adding Server 2003 to SBS 2003 Network

We are running SBS 2003 premium with BE11D SBS edition. A Dell LTO2 autoloader is connected to the SBS box. We are adding a Windows Server 2003 R2 box as a member server and need to back up that server as well.

I intend to install CPS on the new Windows Server 2003 R2 box.

What is the best option to backup the new Windows Server 2003 R2 box? Image it to a network share on the SBS box and then backup the image to tape? Another copy of BE11d? If another copy is the best option, can it "share" the backup device on the SBS box? What are the issues involved in this?

Thanks in advance!

John

Hello John,

Thank you for using Symantec's online forums.

You don't need to put another copy of Backup Exec onto the server.

If you want to backup another server, make sure that you have a license for the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows servers, and install the Remote Agent onto the second server.

The remote agent will let you backup the second server to the tape device attached to the original Backup Exec server.

Can I purchase the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows servers to add on to our Backup Exec for SBS product? It's my understanding that not all agents are available for your BE SBS product and the remote agent is not listed under Agents and Options for the SBS product. If it is availabe, what is the part number for the product with 1 year essential support?

Does it matter that CPS will be installed on this remote server?

Thanks!
