Advanced Open File Option Error during backup of MEDIA server 12.5

1 files were skipped.

Note: The backup job was configured to use the Advanced Open File Option. However, files were skipped during backup processing. Please ensure that the Media Server "xxxxx" is properly licensed with the Advanced Open File Option, or that the job is properly targeted for media servers that are licensed with the Advanced Open File Option.

This happens on all backup jobs but not on every backup.

The jobs are set to use Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service allowing VSS to pick the provider

Any ideas?

We are seeing this too

We are also seeing this problem. Files are skipped then we get this "Warning" with mention of the license, which from Symantecs point of view is now included in the base RAWS license, so it should not be a licensing issue.

AOFO license error due to skipped cookies in users profiles

Since upgrading to Backup Exec 12.5, I am receiving the AOFO license error due to files being skipped during backups.  This is not an AOFO license problem because the files that are being skipped aren't open during the backup.  They are .txt cookie files in users profiles.  This isn't causing a major problem however I would like to get the exceptions cleared so my backups start completing successfully.  I did not have this problem prior to the upgrade to 12.5.  Has anyone seen this problem or know of a fix?

by default

little lesson in BE history:

AOFO is included for free in newer versions (e.g. 12.5) because Microsoft itself implemented the shadow copy technology. Therefore Symantec could no longer sell something that is already included in the systems being backed up.

What that means:

Backup Exec uses by default the given technology of the windows os from Windows 2000 on. So you do not have to activate the AOFO. You only need to do that for backups of machines before Windows 2000 or Linux or Systems where problems occured because of installed software which uses the snapshot provider to or brings its own (like BESR).

finally:

What I would recommend to test is that you uncheck the AOFO option and run the backup again.
Another interesting thing would be, which files are being skiped. What type are those?

Skipped files in Backup Exec 12.5

From how I understand AOFO works, I need to select it in my backup options; otherwise open files such as system files will not be backed up properly.  I also know that because we are running Windows 2003 on our media server, the AOFO uses the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service which is part of the OS.  Maybe it's a problem with VSS.

The files that are being skipped are various cookies within a user's profile which are basically meaningless files.  The files aren't open but they are still being skipped for another reason but I don't know why.  I would like to fix the problem so the backups complete successfully.

Skipped cookies Encounterd

Skipped cookies

Encounterd the same problem here, as from january the 28th of 2010, before no problems with AOFO. This was the date our virus scanner was upgraded. It seems that it: "Now also detects and blocks tracking cookies". The log file shows the cookies being touched by beremote.exe are marked for deletion after the next reboot. Thats probably why it cann't be backupped.

Did you have any luck finding a sulotion?

Hello, If its server 2003,

Hello,

If its server 2003, Please install the VSS Rollup Patch http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940349 (REBOOT REQUIRED)

Hope this helps...

Its a best practice to have a "Support Contract" with Symantec...

nope it's server 2008 and I

nope it's server 2008 and I think it has nothing to do with the VSS. I think it's the virus scanner.
