  • 1.  After installing SEPM Console I can not logon to the consol.

    Posted Sep 15, 2009 04:27 PM

I try logging in with the username: admin and the password I setup during installation.  I receive the error "Failed to connect to the server." I am on the server that is giving me the error.  I even went in and started the service it started then when I try to logon it fails and stops the service. I believe I am configured right but do not know why I am getting this error.

NOTE:  I am using a Virtual Server through VMWare that connects to a VM SQL Server as my data storage.

    HELP Please.

    Hi,

This issue can be caused by a conflict with port 8443

To correct the port conflict, follow the steps below on the SEPM server:
Click Start > Program Files > Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager
Run the Management Server Configuration Wizard
    Select Reconfigure the management server
    Click Next
Change the Server port to an unused port, for example, 8444 may be unused
Continue through the remaining reconfiguration steps and re-enter the password for Database server.
When the Management Server Configuration Wizard has completed, restart the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service.

Thanks for the quick response; unfortunately that did not fix my issue.  Any other ideas?

Just because I am now starting to doubt myself how do I change the admin password?

Look in the Windows event logs.  Do you see references to the Java Virtual Machine?  Since the SQL server is remote, did you install the SQL client tools on your SEPM server?  Please see:

Title: 'Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service stops with a Java -1 error in the event log when using a remote SQL server'
    Document ID: 2007101813380348
    > Web URL: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007101813380348

(If the username and password were incorrect, I think you'd get a different message.)

    Hope this helps,

Thank you Sandra...you are definitly on the right path...now only if I could get that server to stay connected.  You were correct I did not have SQL Client installed on my virtual machine.  I went ahead and installed it I still can not login and get the same error message.  I also can not get the service to stay started.  I do still get the following error in my event log "The Java Virtual Machine has exited with a code of -1, the service is being stopped."  One thing I did notice is that when i ran through the SEP configuration wizard again it did not autopopulate my bcp.exe into my local folder as I was under the impression it would do according to the document you pointed me too.

Anything else I can try?  I am about to wipe it and just start for scratch and install the SQL Client first but I still dont think it will populate that directory correctly...

To tell you how frustrated I was I manually copied over the BINN directory from the SQL Server to my SQL Client...This worked but now I am wondering why it did not autopopulate and I had to do it manually?

I also changed one thing in my Management Server Configuration Wizard I pointed the SQL Client folder locally to C:\Program Files\ Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn instead of pointing it to the SQL server Binn folder....Should I have been doing this all along or should I be pointed to the SQL Database?

How can I tell if this is utilizing the SQL server correctly?

    Thanks in advance!

The SQL client folder should populate automatically in the Server configration wizard.

If the service for SEPM is failing.

Can you check the Scm server0.log file & see if there is any Http error code in it. if yes then can you please paste that error over here.

Or else can can you check the size of the Scm server0.log & catilina.out logs ( Under C:\Program files\Symantec\Symantec endpoint Protection Manager\Tomcat\Logs ) it should be 3 KB in ideal senario in case if its 5KB or 4 KB respectively can you paste the logs on this thread.

I reinstalled from scratch today and got everything to work just fine.  The key was installing the SQL client before installing SEPM.  Thanks for all the help.
