    Posted Jan 27, 2014 05:03 PM

I have three servers which, after installing the SMA (manually) and see the Altiris server, but never get a computer ID. I have tried doing a clean uninstall, and also tried updating using aexagentutil to reassign the NS. Still no luck.

All three servers have uninterrupted network access to the NS, and all three are in vlans with other servers which are talking to the notification server with no problem. My NS is running 7.1.

Can any one shed some light on this situation?

    Thanks,
    Erica

I did actually have to install the client manually, but I entered the NS server and it has taken.  I've also installed the client manually in the same network space with no issues.

    I even ran aexagentutil.exe /server=<servername>

This is what it looks like now.

Windows Firewall services are all disabled. Notification server permissions have not been changed.

I can't search for the client's GUID,  because it doesn't have one. Is there anyway to force the client to get a GUID?

    1. If no GUID exists, the client has never made contact with the server.
    • You may see the following error in the agent.log file from the client. “Description: SendBasicInventory failed: Error saving event: The system cannot find the path specified. (-2147024893).” Also, you may see, after attempting to push a new agent to the client machine, a failed install for that computer in the agent push report. This can be caused the temporary file location references controlling the client computer TEMP environment variables being set to invalid or inaccessible locations. To resolve this issue, Set the temporary (TEMP) drive letters and path to a functional location (usually %windir%\TEMP), and restart the client machine.
    • You can also make sure that the Altiris Notification Server is not paused.

Thanks for checking back in. I have been waiting for a maintenance window when I can restart the servers to see if this fix works. I should know more on Monday.

I'm definitely still seeing issues on these servers. I uninstalled the altiris clients, changed the location of the TEMP folder, restarted the servers and then tried to install the altiris clients and I'm still getting the same error.

I'm really at loss at this point.

    Hi,

Please check these discussions about similar issue that you have

    Additional:

You can enable log viewer for SMA on client side to see what really happens when Symantec Management Agent tries to send basic inventory or refresh a policies from NS Server.

Go to client computer where this problem occurs and execute this command line to enable log viewer:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\AeXAgentDiagnostics.dll"

Checking these similar posts, none of them quite describe the issue I'm having. These servers were installed manually, but none of them has ever had a GUID.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the client on several occasions, but there has been no change.

I also noticed that none of my problem servers has a logs folder so it seems like the install isn't even getting far enough to create that. Not sure if there is a flag I should be using to create the folder.

I've done some more investigation on this issue. I can't install the client via the URL because the client install page won't load. I went over it with one of our network techs, and he sees the traffic as going from the client to the NS but no page loads.

I then intalled the client manually, and ran into the no GUID issue. When I try to sent an inventory from the client to the server, my network tech sees no traffic at all over the altiris ports, 50123 and 50124.

    Hi Erica,

    >I can't search for the client's GUID,  because it doesn't have one. Is there anyway to force the client to get a GUID?

    Yes there is:

    - open Windows console

    - go to C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent

    - run "aexagentutil /resetguid" or "aexnsagent /resetguid". Depending on the version one of them should work. Note that neither of them will output anything in the console window. Run both of them.

    - then Send basic inventory using GUI

Also coule you please attach the agent logs here?

If client is XP/2003 they are located in C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Logs

If client is Vista/2008 or higher they are located in C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Symantec Agent\Logs

You can delete all the logs priori running "resetguid" command and then just archive every LOG file that will be created after sending basic inventory.

Hopefully the logs will have all the answers

    thanks!

I ran both "aexagentutil /resetguid" and "aexnsagent /resetguid". Still no computer ID for the client. I see a lot of connection failed because host failed to respond.  Not sure why that is, and if I have an issue with my NS.

According to your Agent log output, you have some network issue with same error code, described in this TECH http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH34740

    Hi, Erica:

When configuring the agent, you must supply both the name of the server AND the web server it will connect to.

I've read that you have run aexagentutil.exe /server=<servername>

Try to run aexagentutil.exe /server=<servername> /web=<servername>/Altiris, so if your server is named AltirisServer you should run

    aexagentutil.exe /server=AltirisServer /web=http://AltirisServer/Altiris

    Kind regards:

According to logs all the connections are attempted through HTTP and agent simply cannot reach the host.

Can you try opening URL below in Internet Explorer or other browser?

    Progress is being made!

So it turns out that one of my problem servers is behind a piece of network equipment that is causing issues with all the other services trying to pass through it. When I reset the guid on the other problem servers as sergeZ recommended, it worked. That server got an ID and is not communicating with my NS.

    Thanks for the help everyone.
