  • 1.  Agent Deploy not re-installing Agent

    Hello all,

We have a problem now with our environment. It seems like every machine that we re-image (not using DS just yet) does not get the Agent deployed automatically to it.

When I look at the "Agent Installation Report", the machine still shows a "1" in the "Is Managed" colum. I assumed that since our Network Discovery is running every hour, it should check to see if the agent is running on that machine, and if it isn't it would re-install it.

I admit that I am not an expert when it comes to Agent Deployment, but I am hoping there is a way to automate this process.

    Thanks,

    Mike

When discovering computers, (whatever method you use), the client will have a record created, which creates a guid, and then gets flagged as ismanaged=0. This allows it to get added to the default collection for agent push (or a custom collection you may or may not have created) of all machines with that flag.

Now the agent push needs to reference that collection, and be setup on a schedule to properly push. One issue you may see, is that if  you reimage, you could be creating duplicate resources with the same name, since the computer has already been 'discovered', so the name will be there several times, with different guids.

You'll need to provide more information on what exactly your process is, and we can surely help out.

Thanks for the reply. I think I understand what you are saying...

Our process is to push Agents out using the default container  "All Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008 Computers with no Altiris Agent installed".

As far as our image process, we do the following...

1.) Remove the Machine Account out of AD (At least my staff is supposed to do that)
2.) Boot the PC using a Custom DOS bootdisk
3.) Run Ghost and put the "Gold" image back onto the machine
4.) Reboot the machine, and process the "XP Mini-Setup" stage.
5.) After XP install has completed, then re-install all required software.

Our current process does not include removing any machine accounts out of Altiris, but we can do that. I guess I was under the impression that the Agent would install on its own. What do you think we need to modify in our existing process to make this work.

    Thanks,

    Mike

image, providing you delete the agent guids that get created. There is also some dependency on when the discovery process is run (every hour?), and when the agent install is set to run (not sure you specified that).

You'll need to check the duplicate computers policy\report  under the configuration tab, server settings, notifcation server infrastructure to see if I'm right about the duplicate names.

The network discovery & Agent Installation are scheduled to run every hour, during Business Hours. I ran that report, but I did not see the machine listed in the report. I have deleted the GUIDs from the "Discovered Devices" list, and deleted the machine from the "All Computers" collection. I am hoping that this will work.

I'll let you know if it works.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    That Worked!!!

Once I removed the machine from the "All Computers" collection, it automatically installed the agent.

So, I guess that we have to watch machines as they are being re-imaged... and delete them from Altiris.

    Thanks,

    Mike
