  • 1.  Agent Icon

I installed Altiris 7.1 and have started doing some testing.  My first test, upgrading 7.0 agents via redirection, worked well with one exception.  I don't have an agent icon in the start menu any longer.  I have verified the same behavior on three windows 7 x64 workstations.  They upgraded from the 7.0 32 bit agent to the 64 bit 7.1 agent without issue otherwise.  I am guessing that uninstalling the agent in its entirety and reinstalling it would probably produce an icon but I figured I would ask if anyone had seen this before testing that theory.

Is the default set to show the tray icon on 7.1? If it is you could have an issue with the upgrade.

The tray icon feature should be present on the policy xml for the agent to show on the tray.

Check the various Targeted Agent Settings policies under the User Control tab.  Ensure 'Show client tray icon' is checked.  If the client still doesn't have it, but all the policies have 'Show client tray icon' checked, try forcing a configuration update on the client so that it receives this policy information and displays a tray icon.

For Windows 7, release notes indicate this is a known issue, and this KB indicates you can only fix it by ensuring that the feature I mention above is checked when you roll out the agent.  If it wasn't checked and you already rolled out the agent, you must uninstall the agent and reinstall.

    Release notes:
Issue: Symantec Management Agent icon may not appear in the system tray
Description: When you install the Symantec Management Agent, you can choose to display the Symantec Management Agent icon in the system tray on the client computer.  However, on Windows 7 computers, the Symantec Management Agent icon does not appear in the system tray.

Actually this was not the tray icon but the icon in the start menu.  A complete removal of the previous agent and install of the new agent produced the expected results.  I will check out the KB mcclemson posted and do some testing with that.

Start menu works the same way -- must be part of the settings when you initially roll out the agent.
