Agent for VMWare and Hyper-V

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi, Hope someone can shed light on this.

I understand that for each server running VMware ESXi 5.0 an agent for VMWare and Hyper-V is required.

Questions:

1. Does Agent for VMWare and Hyper-V license includes Agent for Window to protect unlimited VMs already ?

---> To perform GRT backups and restore on VMs running Windows OS, is  Agent for Windows required ?

---> If I have a VM running Windows 2008 R2 and MS SQL 2008 R2 STD, Do I need  Agent for Windows and Agent for Application and Database to perform GRT backup and restore? Or do I just need Agent for Application and Database?

2. I have VMWare VSphere 5.0 Essentials kit, It has VCenter but not the standard edition, what VCenter Editions are supported for Agent for VMware and Hyper-V ?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi,

1a. Yes. A license per ESX host covers n-amount of VMs.
1b. The RAWS agent will need to be installed on any VM you want to do GRT restores on.
1c. When you have an application license such as the Agent for Applications and Databases to backup an SQL server, you don't need to purchase a RAWS agent S well. The application agent covers this allowing you to install the RAWS agent on that server.
2. You need to check the SCL for your version of Backup Exec, but you should be fine. Always good to confirm this though.

Thanks!

Hi,

Does the Agent for VMWare and Hyper-V license gives me the rights to install Agent for Windows on unlimited number of VMs on my ESXi host? Do I need to purchase Agent for Windows or no?

Thanks,

Paul

The AVVI and HyperV agents allows you to install an unlimited number of RAWS/RALUS in the VM's hosted on the licensed host

To have GRT backups of applications like SQL, you need to buy an Agent for Application and Databases license for each applications/databases in each VM.

BE requires the vStorage API which only comes with a paid version of ESX. As long as you have this API you are fine.
