agents on media servers

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have read a couple of posts in the past and have read conflicting posts...  Do you need to install an agent on the same server that the administrative console is on?  Is it necessary?

The licenses for the agents and options that are available witin backup exec are installed on the Media server. These agents/options are as follows.

Agent for Applications and Databases (Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, Domino, Oracle, Enterprise Vault, Active Directory)

Enterprise Server Option (Advanced Disk Backup Option (ADBO), Central Admin Option (CASO), SAN Shared Storage Option)

Agent for VMware and Hyper-V

Desktop and Laptop Option

File System and Exchange Archiving


Library Expansion Option

Virtual Tape Library (VTL) Unlimited Drive

Deduplication Option

the remote agent which allows the Media Server/Backup Exec server to communicate with the remote machine is pushed to each remote machine that youre wanting to back up.

When you install BE on a server, the remote agent is automatically installed on that server.  The BE core licence comes with a RAWS licence for this purpose.  The RAWS on the media server is meant for backing up the media server itself

If your media server has other applications like SQL databases, Exchange, etc, then you would need to buy the appropriate agent licences to back up these databases/applications.
