Hello fellow Symantec Gear Heads,

As a special education tech for a school board I am required to install a large quantity of assistive software over the summer after re-imaging our machines.  I have had some success with AI packages last summer and for the most part  the AI's saved me a ton of time with installing software such as Kurzweil 3000, Dragon NS, WordQ ect ect.

Recently I've had trouble configuring AI packages that will work on multiple platforms.  I've been confused about which conditions would be best to build these AI packages.
*Is it best to build them on the actual Image we will be using over the summer or a stripped down XP image / OEM image?
*Should I be focusing on a specific hardware platform? ie: Dell E5500 Laptop, Dell Optiplex 760 Desktop?  Ive been encouraged to build these AIs on specific hardware platforms to be deployed on the same platform in the future.  However last year I had great results with building AI on a desktop and deploying on all kinds of different desktops and laptops.
*These Assistive Tech softwares tend to be quite large in size (Dragon Naturally Speaking v10 almost 2gig!) so does AI snapshot effectively work with large software packages?

These AI packages are just about the only thing that can lighten up an otherwise very large, and repetitive workload.  Can anyone suggest a method with best possible conditions for Building AI packages to work across multiple hardware platforms?  It would simply be too crazy to build an AI set for every software for every model of computer we have in the Board.

Any help, advice or referrals would be much appreciated by myself, my partner in crime and our sanity ; )

What is an AI package?

This is a support forum for users of Wise application packaging products. I don't recognise the term "AI packages" unless it's an acronym for Artificial Intelligence Packages, which also makes no connection with any tools I am familiar with.

If you are looking for solutions to repetitive software installation, perhaps you should look at terminal services or Citrix, so that you can install the software on a central server and then have users run that install as remote terminal users.

RE:What is an AI Package?

As a new Symantec Forum user I think I may have posted in the wrong forum.  AI packages are part of the Symantec Suite / Deployment Tools.  AI's are Automated Installations that are generated with a "Snapshot" software that will benchmark a machine then make a comparison to record changes a software installation has made to that machine. Symantec's AI Builder will then let you modify these entries(registry, profiles, shortcuts, updates, reboots ect) It will bundle everything up into an easy .exe that can even be deployed via Ghost Console ....effectively saving a guy like me alot of time ; )

If you could refer me to the correct forum or make any suggestions it would be much appreciated.  Its been difficult to nail down an effective approach to build these to work 100% and across several hardware platforms.

Thanks again EdT.  Its nice to see a 'Trusted Advisor' is at the helm!

Are you using Deployment Server or Notification Server?

With so many Symantec products to choose from, it would help if you could identify the exact product or product suite you are using. That will make it easier to point you to the appropriate forum

How to install a Deployment Server

Hi friends,

I just install a Notification Server 6 using Altiris Client Solution Suit 7 successful.
Now I try to install a Deployment Server using the same software that is Altiris Client Solution Suit 7. At the window <Notification Server Configuration> I enter the follow:

User name: my domain name
Password: my password

Select the Web location for Notification Server

Web site: Default Web Site
Fully Qualified Domain Name: NS name    Port: 80 SSL Port: blank

After I click the button <NEXT> it pops up an error below:

Unable to create a new directory within the specified web location. Verify that the fully qualified domain name resolveds back to the server where you are installing Nofification Server on.

Please provide assistance to resolve this problem.

Thank You
John le

Wrong forum

This forum is called Wise Application Packaging Forum.
Your product is called Altiris Deployment Server.
There is a forum called Altiris Deployment Solutions.
Posting there should yield a better result than posting here.

Thread locked.
