Alternative for initial deployment for known computers

Created: 13 Aug 2012 | 15 comments

Hello Guys,

Our company needs to find an alternative for initial deployment for known computers.

For a customer we are going to image 5.000 computers. The customer needs all those computers imported in they Symantec Deploment Solution.

We are using predefinied computers to import a CSV file which later can be used by the customer for import.

Problem then is that all the computers are "known" and our Initial Deployment screen won't pop up. We know initial deployment only works with unknown computers but what's the alternative?

It is impossible for us to deploy a image by job every couple hours for different computer batches.

Do you guys know any alternatives?

Please mention whether customers are using DS 6.x OR DS 7.x ?

You could give ImageInvoker a go. This was designed to provide a single mechanism for imaging known and unknown computers in the DS6 branch.

Ian,

Sorry, we are using for imaging Symantec Deployment Solution 7.

Do you have an alternative?

Ah sorry -I saw your post was under 7.x, but then you mentioned DS6.9 later. This problem is resolved in the upcoming DS7.5, but sadly not for DS7.1.

Other might have workarounds for you, but I am not proficient enough in DS7 to usefully contribute here.

Kind Regards,
Ian./

Yes, we are using 7.1 but our customer uses 6.9.

Thank you for your effort.

Hi Mr V,

Just to clarify this thread, there is currently no alternative to intitial deployment for known machines on the DS 7.x branch. In the slated december release of ITMS 7.5, this option will finally be available.

Hi,

There was a previous thread where someone had heard from a user group meeting that this was going to be available early in December.

I've not heard anything 'official' on this though.

Kind Regards,
Ian./

I am not sure if you are looking for similar solution...

Create a job with boot to PXE task and deploy image task and rollout it on group of computers.

When machine will boot in PXE it will fetch next task assigned to it.

Hi Shailesh, yeah -the standard way of just scheduling the tasks manually is the only solution at the moment.

The advantage of the "Initial Deploy" functionality is that it is available deskside and does not require the techs to access the console. In my environment for example, the "log into console and schedule jobs" solution would require me to create and provision a swathe of user accounts for all the techs who might require a machine to be re-image.

Shailesh,

The way you mentioned is the way our Assembly department are imaging the computers at the moment.

Thank you for your effort.

There is no official "date" yet for the 7.5 release, but I can confirm how it will work, and it will almost definately be before year end.  There's never a guarentee on that, but internally, the pressure is very high to not slip.

I know several have tried to make something like this in v7, and they work.  Honestly, the way it works in 7.5 I'm pretty sure you'll like.  You can put as many jobs/tasks on the menu that you want, literally exactly like Initial Deployment today, and the new managed menu will show up only on managed computers with no other job assigned.  Predefined computers also got an upgrade, where if you get into automation and you're "unknown" you'll be prompted with a list of predefined computers you can choose from, and IF you choose one, get the job assigned.  If you choose none, you can choose the initial deployment menu instead, and things like that.  It should be far more user friendly.

So if you can wait a few months, it'll help.

Otherwise, some have built a VBS menu they launch automatically in WinPE that from a basic will simply pull down an image and reboot.  it's not super elegant, but it does the job in a pinch and maybe provide a hold-over until the product does what you want for you.
