Altiris on 2 Servers

Hi all,

we are currently setting up 2 Altiris Servers:

1 for CMS L2 (600 Clients) + SMS L3 (100 Servers)

2 for CMDB and Helpdesk

Server 1 will use Inventory Forwarding to Server 2

The main reason for this setup is performance on server 2

Our old config was on 1 server, contained no SMS, but was terribly slow when editing assets.

So we thought about following solution

Server 1 handles the agents, software, patches, server monitoring

Server 2 handles only "Manual Input"

However, I start questioning myself if this topology is wise, since i do not know what interaction is lost:

for instance...

- how do i get Monitoring alerts (server 1) into the helpdesk (server 2)

- will we be able to run software compliancy reports

- will we be able to get carbon copy from the HD console

- will we be able to let HD trigger software-delivery tasks.

So here are my questions:

- Anyone out there with experience on such a topology

- Any suggestion about this topology, about what functional loss we should expect or how it can be cured?

Thanks for any feedback

Yep, I know about the inventory forwarding, works as a charm.

The thing that I am woried about is that I have put the CMDB on the "Report Server"... in order to keep the "Manual Interactions" on 1 machine. There's not much information about that configuration available, at least not in the usual places...

Thanks for the link to the article
