Altiris 6 Console Tabs Not Loading on Server

Created: 03 Dec 2012 | 7 comments

I guess my Altiris 6 server is feeling the pressure of its ITMS 7.1 replacement since the Altiris Console tabs other than Getting Started aren't coming up on the server itself (i.e. no problem with console on any of my PCs).  I get no errors where it just says "Loading ..." in the left pane of the console.  Ran repairs on the Altiris Console and the Altiris Console Update (KB25949) but problem remains.  Came across TECH 18277 and 21254 in the Symantec KB although it doesn't appear they apply in my case.  Naturally I rebooted the server before trying anything and even upgraded to IE8 which didn't make a difference.

This issue prevents me from installing any Altiris updates as this needs to be done on the server itself although not critical since only "Altiris NS SP3 Update KB60314" remains which I can forego.  It just bothers me that I can't use the Altiris Console on the local server machine if I really needed to.  Please let me know if you have any ideas on how to fix this problem.  Thanks in advance!

FYI: I also tried lowering my IE (intranet) security settings all the way down and repaired the Altiris NS SP3 Update KB50726 in Add/Remove Programs but neither helped.  This appears to be browser or add-in related although not sure where to start looking for clues.

I have the same problem....just says 'loading' (but the home page does load??)  We are in the middle of migrating to SMP 7.1 and still need to use Altiris 6 console for the older agents.  I was setting up patch mgmt and it seems with XP workstations that are fully patched, those are the ones I cannot use the NS 6 console on any longer.  I was able to before all current patches were applied.

I imaged a fresh XP box and the console loads as normal.  It seems to me that some MS patch has broken Console 6...i'll try to see which one and reply back again.

Yes...the Getting Started page does load but that's about it.  I run the Altiris 6 console on Win7 boxes so not sure if there's an issue with XP and an MS patch.  I have no problems on Win7 but get the "loading..." issue I described when clicking on any of the other tabs while on my Altiris 6 server running Windows 2003 Standard.

FYI: Still have no clue why the tabs other than Getting Started aren't loading when running the Altiris 6 console on the server itself but found that the 6.5 console appears to work just fine!  At least it seems I have a workaround in case I want to get to Solution Center to download/install that last console update.

I ran into a similar issue but only with two separate workstations (both WinXP and IE8 - downgraded one of them to IE7 and had the same issue). The 6.0 NS console (we are on NS R14) on other workstations and the server work fine and if we try the 6.5 console on the two workstations affected, that works fine. The users and myself have full admin rights to install ActiveX controls.

The initial problem was they would get the error "Error loading ActiveX control. You may need to adjust your browser settings to allow download of signed ActiveX controls. (ImageList )" anytime trying to use the 6.0 NS console tabs, other than 'Getting Started' and 'Incidents'. After doing the fix to run the AltirisNSCabInstaller, manually removing, unregistering and re-registering the Altiris-related controls, I tracked what seems to be the root cause of the ActiveX error down to another ActiveX control that was installed called "Microsoft ImageList Control 6.0 (SP6)". Once I disabled that control, the ActiveX error went away but now they just get a "Loading ..." screen on the left pane of the console like you described. I'm currently looking into what relation the "Microsoft ImageList Control 6.0 (SP6)" control may have with the problem but haven't found anything yet.

Anyone have any ideas on that one?

I resolved the issue we were having on the two workstations by re-enabling the "Microsoft ImageList Control 6.0 (SP6)" add-on and then installing the fix listed in the "Recommended Resolution" section of Microsoft KB article 2687441.

There is a known issue with Microsoft Office 2007 security update MS12-060: "Windows Common Control-based embedded ActiveX controls may fail to load within pre-existing Office documents, within third-party add-ins, and when you insert new controls in developer mode."

Not sure if this fix is applicable in my case because I can't bring up the Altiris Console on the Altiris server itself which doesn't have any Office apps loaded.  However, the add-ons could indeed be the problem on my Altiris server so I'll do more research on this as a possible lead.  Thanks!
