Hi,

I am new to the altiris/symantec world and have recently inherited an environment that is managed by the Altiris DS 6.8 version. I am currently looking into upgrading the version. What I noticed is that 6.9 basically the same thing as 6.8 while 7.1 is an entirely different beast. I am just looking for opinions on whether 7.1 is worth it for a small environment of only 400 or so computers.

Any thoughts?

Also I have been reading up on migrating the database to a new server. I found that if i don't keep the same server name/ip address it can cause some extra work. What exactly does the database of this hold? I may just start from scratch.

Thank you.

It all depends on who you talk to and the features you are currently using.  I suspect that the majority of users on here would tell you to stick with 6.9 or wait until 7.5 is released.

The upgrade to 6.9 SP5 would get you to a supported version as well as offer you support for Windows 7, 2008, etc.

Regarding the database, it all depends on what you are running.  If you are running DS standalone, it should be fairly straight forward.  If you are also utilizing other aspects of CMS (such as NS, Asset Management, ServiceDesk, etc.), then you may have more hard time doing your migration to a new DB server.  This link should help if you only have DS to worrry about.
